At my husbands work, he deals with a lot of high-end clients like studio executives . One of them, we will not name who, told us that the ending they saw was not the ending that they showed us.

The alternative ending goes like this:

Rey says to Palpatine ‘your line ends with me.’ She fights him, and sacrifices herself defending Ben. She tells Ben, ‘ I am nobody, but I can be somebody if I can help you live on as the man you’re meant to be.’ She dies in his arms. Ben lives to honor her and takes the name of Skywalker.

While I wish they both lived, because they started off with the story arc of the two dyads and they really should have seen that through, it is more believable to me that Ben would somehow find a way to stay in touch with her or even bring her back because of his extensive lifetime worth of training in both the light and dark forces. Rey, as strong as she is, her training was a bit haphazard. The most we can hope from her is that she can chant ‘Be with me’ and have him force connect with her.
