This year we're seeing several movements in R&B. Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men are continuing their streaks from previous years, while groups like TLC are reaching their commercial peaks (if only their treatment from the label reflected that). Seal, a London-based artist who previously worked with funk, blues, and acid house, would cross over to both The States and the Billboard Hot 100 with the soul single Kiss from a Rose. 1995 also marks the debut of fourteen-year-old Monica, who would become one of the defining R&B artists of the decade.

Rap is also having its moment in mainstream pop culture. I talked briefly about the rise of G-funk and reality rap a few polls ago. Here, we're seeing more of that rise with the late Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise. We're also starting to see rap and R&B start to mix together. Nowadays, the blending of the two genres is incredibly common. New jack swing already helped to bridge the gap between the styles. But with artists like Montell Jordan providing both R&B vocals and hip-hop flow, to Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes' rap verses with TLC, to Gangsta's Paradise soul cover in the chorus, this blend is starting to become much more common. The Stevie Wonder sample in Gangsta's Paradise is notable for another reason. While hip-hop was built on the art of sampling, this specific style of vocal sampling would grow in popularity this decade, most notably from the work of Bad Boy Records and Sean Combs (F.K.A. Puff Daddy/[P.] Diddy). While controversial at the time, we will continue to see songs exemplifying this shift in the mainstream rap sound -- especially in the decades to come.
