Real Talk
My Sam Wilson as Cap America reaction.
Look, I have no issue with people of color as superheroes. As an Asian, there is a real dearth of Asian superheroes.
I have no problems with changing race of characters, like Nick Fury or in the Ultimates with asian Wasp.
It's fine.
I'm just annoyed when characters of color are given a mantle from a white character. Im a fan of Jaime Reyes as Blue Beetle, hell I even like Ryan Choi as Atom... when that happened for a hot second before they killed him.
But minorities deserve more than just a PR stunt to draw readers. Why make Falcon the new Captain America? Why not just make Falcon more important? Why not just make him a more influential, compelling, and formidable character?
Look, if DC said they wanted an Asian Batman, I can't lie, I'd be excited for that. But deep down, I'd be annoyed we were passed down an character with a history of being white, when it's more beneficial for me to see an original Asian character who is well written and rises to prominence on its own merit.
Again.... I realize Sam Wilson will sell better under the Captain American moniker and that kids of color will really resonate with it. I'm just expressing I'd rather have them push Falcon because he has the capability of being a strong character on his own.
I get it. Captain America is a house hold name. He is iconic. He has history.
But I want comic companies to have the confidence that their ethnic characters have the ability to be successful. Having 60 years of backstory isn't necessary if you just really push and utilize their characters.
At the very least, I'm happy it's not like the Great Ten or Kitana whose identities are solely based on being Asian rather than being compelling superheroes who are Asian.
I'm soooo bored!!
Snapchat me?? Nessie_pie Talk to me? Something?(:
Why are there no Homestuck/He-Man cross overs?
