Explaining Hypnosis a bit
I have had several people ask me questions about my hypnosis headcanons and what it is. This is for all my dear mooties and curious folks!
*I am not a doctor. This is a simplified explanation to inspire starting your own research!
Okay so the most common questions I hear in real life and online are:
1. Is it real?
2. How does it work?
My answers to those are:
1. Yes, it is very real. You've already experienced it yourself! (More on that later!)
2. This ones a little more complicated. Let me explain.
Trance
Our brains can't be 100% locked in all the time. The conscious and subconscious mind are constantly changing shifts. You enter trance every single day naturally without even realizing it.
When you're walking or driving and get to the destination without really remembering how you got there, that was trance. When you "zone out" during conversations, that's trance. Hypnosis is simply making it happen intentionally, either with another person or with self-hypnosis through meditation.
Hypnosis has many benefits, it can be used to treat phobias, addiction, and mental illness. It can be a fun bonding activity between friends or something spicy between partners. Hypnosis is a consensual, two-sided interaction between trusting parties.
Here are some basic steps you may see in a hypnosis session.
Induction: Process of bringing or "dropping" someone into trance. There are many different methods with various levels of difficulty.
Deepener: After the initial induction, deepening the trance and helping the subject relax further. ex. "Every breath you take makes you relax more," or "the longer you listen to my voice, the harder it is to think."
Suggestion: This is where the magic happens! Once in trance, the subconscious mind can create any scenario if the subject has a good imagination. They hypnotist is simply providing some scenario. ex. "You feel a tickling sensation slowly spread down your legs," or "your butt is stuck to the chair."
Trigger: Associating a word or action with a suggestion. Lingering triggers can even happen after subject has awoken from trance. ex. Saying the word "sleep" will drop the subject back into trance without an induction, or hypnotist snapping fingers will make the subject forget something, etc. Anything can be assigned to any trigger and triggers can be removed or only last a specified amount of time.
Awakener: Opposite of deepener. Waking the subject up and reminding them of any lingering suggestions or triggers, assuring them they are safe and calm, and giving them time to get back to normal.
Bonus Vocab
Fractionation: Bringing the subject in and out of trance repeatedly in a short time frame. Causes confusion and generally deeper trance.
Conditoning: A gradual process of training someone to subconsciously react to certain stimuli. As a subject gets more used to hypnosis, they will be conditioned to drop faster.
Reality VS Fantasy
I think the biggest reason people think hypnosis isn’t real is how it's portrayed in media. Cartoons, adult media, memes, so much pop culture portrays fantasies that do not reflect the reality.
You may have seen: vampire thrawl, siren song, alpha command, swirling colored eyes, snakes, mind control, pied piper, brainwashing, machines, apps, love potions, etc.
Another problem with fantasy portrayals is the lack of consent and personal agency. Even in deep mindless trance, your real self is still in there somewhere. You won't do anything you wouldn't normally do and a good hypnotist wouldn't try to make you.
Reality: guided relaxation, spirals, swinging pendulum induction, audio files, natural trance state, more open to suggestion, trust needed between subject and hypnotist, subject won't do anything they wouldn't do normally
This is not to say fantasy isn't fun!! You can use triggers and suggestions to turn a real session into something like that. It's just important to be mindful of the difference, especially in real life.
Please send more questions and requests my way! I love real and fantasy hypnosis I am not picky!!
