(( @cunninginstinct, on the subject of Devon’s sudden appearance and staying in the Keep. I never truly thought of it before but now it came to me that Sand is probably less than amused by this course of events.
When everything is going fine and he is respected and needed, completely out of the blue comes this stranger and Ophelia stares at him like he was some kind of a divine being and not a mere mortal. Okay, that’s natural, poor girl finally found her daddy, give her some time to adjust and graciously forgive that some things go awry because she’s jumpy, nervous and Sand who before had to as little as say a word to get what he wanted, now he is forced to ask, repeatedly, for new alchemy equipment, for ingredients, for books that were promised to him and he is not liking it at all.
But after the rough beginning, Ophelia and Devon grow close and it turns out to be even WORSE because if before Sand thought it was hard to keep Ophelia’s attention focused, now he feels outright ignored. Now it’s Devon in the morning, Devon in the afternoon and Devon in the evening. “Sand, Devon can use all the workbenches in the basement, you won’t mind, right?”, “Oh, Devon needs that book, we’ll smuggle it from Luskan as the top priority”. “Devon said that”, “Devon said this”. Devon is suddenly the best wizard in the Keep, he knows everything, he can cast a Fireball that rivals Qara’s in power, he talks about Planes and City of Doors, he has such a delightful familiar, he can craft wands - he can craft, he’s obviously the only one who can - he’s knowledgeable, clever and awesome. Devon, Devon, Devon. And no, Sand is definitely not feeling the lack of a curious bard at his side when he’s brewing potions, he definitely doesn’t care that he stopped being asked for advice on all things magical and not-magical and he definitely doesn’t mind that instead of talking with him in the library over a cup of tea Ophelia now hangs out with Devon, all starry-eyed and radiant.
He’s not UPSET at all! And he definitely does not want to yell at Devon that although he might be Ophelia’s father, Sand is still AN UNOFFICIAL UNCLE AND HE SAW HER FIRST, SO WOULD YOU GET IN LINE AND WAIT FOR YOUR TURN, PLEASE.))
