Not everyone is aware of what happened in Buffalo or the countless other times something similar has happened (shocking, I know). With all the finger pointing, excuses, shock, dismissals and horror… this question comes to mind.
Let’s have some dialogue. Is the term “mental illness” only reserved for a “select” few? If Julio grew up in a domestic abusive home and in order to escape the disfunction and violence, he finds a summer job in the downtown Los Angeles. There, he falls for a coworker but his affection is not returned and at the age of 18, he responds by shooting the object of his affection. Will America automatically give Julio the benefit of the doubt and grant him the coveted label “mentally ill”? Does he meet the criteria?
