Okay, Anon, you are right. You are so right. So THIS IS GONNA BE MY HEADCANON:
Astarion WILL not perish after his Tav dies. He WILL go on, he will NOT GIVE UP. Because he owes that to Tav. They made the life possible he has now - to live freely, to love, and he owes it to himself also!
And of course it breaks him when Tav dies. Grief is possibly, no probably, the hardest emotion to ever overcome because you never really overcome it. It becomes a part of you. So he takes it and takes Tav and all the memories and the love and carries them with him all day, EVERYDAY, because he will never forget. They are forever with him and he will keep on living for himself and for Tav, honouring their memories and life together. And he's strong, he's a survivor!
And it will be hard, terribly so, near impossible. There will be times when he can't possibly think of a way to carry on. But then he will, because he has too. He'll never be truly alone again though, because he carries Tav with him everywhere he goes.
And also because Tav would beat his ass up if he just gave up.
And also also, no matter what: their souls will always find each other. No matter in what form - they belong together. They'll always come back to being together.
There you go, this is what I'll tell myself from now on - because I won't have it any other way in my mind - at least for me personally.
