poe dameron was a base baby. shara stopped flying around six months.Ā it was growing snug in the cockpit, but she wouldāve kept going ā itās not until another heated argument with kes ( āi canāt lose you both, shara. i wonāt.ā ) that it hits her how stubborn and selfish sheās been. she stays grounded, but she also stays on base, restless and determined to keep herself useful.
so it happens that heās born in the medbay of the rebellion base, with a couple ( read: thirty+ ) people waiting down the hall to hear the news. in a time when children were a novelty, poe becomes a beacon of hope. thereās endless hands waiting to take him from his parentsā tired arms; it becomes a common sight to see him in a pilotās arms as they walk down to the mess, bounced in a lap, swaddled and sleeping on leiaās shoulder ( most often when heās been plucked from luke, both resting in some corner chair ). kes and shara chose his godparents long months before; han and leia shoulder the task, but they arenāt alone in it.
when heās sent home three months later, itās not only shara that grieves. itās not just kes. his absence is an open space ā- a missing warmth, a blanket thatās been cast aside. most of them donāt see poe again, but they all ask how he is. then again, some of them do. a different base, a different time, but they know him all the same ( he still has his fatherās eyes, still keeps his mother in that smile ). maybe he brings them hope again. maybe itās only sentiment, but they feel it: a warmth that keeps darkness at bay. a vibrant & unfailing light. itās no surprise poe feels at home when he joins the resistanceās ranks. ( he really is ).
