PetSmart Night Shift Gothic
-The day people look at you when you walk in. "Finally, you're here. I've been waiting." You look at the clock. You are six minutes early.
-"Sophie is here again," they tell you. You go into the back. There are 43 dogs here tonight. They are all named Sophie.
-One of the dogs has been here for longer than you have. She never goes home. Does she have an owner? Or does she belong to the building itself? You never feel brave enough to ask.
-"All of this working at night is turning you into a vampire," your roommate jokes. You smile and stare at her neck. You are so hungry. So very, very hungry.
-The dishwasher says Do Not Use. This is not unusual. You have never seen anyone use it. Plenty of things are broken in this place. But most of them do not say Or Else.
-The ice cream machine growls loudly but don't worry. It rarely bites.
-Sometimes you ask the day people who it is that keeps putting full soda cups in the trash. They tell you it is Gerald. Any time anything goes wrong, they say it is Gerald. You look on the schedule and no one named Gerald has worked here in years. Sometimes you feel him watching you.
-You crush a cricket with your bare hand, knowing there will be another one tomorrow. Sophie stares at you with unblinking eyes. The howling sound gets louder.
-Things move by themselves in the store. Bags fall off the shelves. Doors open and close. The dispenser on the wall makes three clicking sounds every so often. And you often hear screams coming from the break room. You start to eat your lunch in the lobby instead.
-Every television in the building blares the Aristocats over and over every night. Everybody wants to be a cat. The cats sing it again and again until they are no longer singing. They are chanting. Worshipping their desired form. Everybody, everything wants to be a cat. You find yourself looking at the rodent section and licking your lips.
-As you take a sip of your sixth energy drink, you wonder if it is healthy to be able to vibrate through the walls.
-You are taking Sophie for a walk when all of a suddenly she lunges for you and takes a bite out of your neck. As you lie on the floor, you see your manager lean over you with a wide smile. The last thing you hear before you bleed out into unconsciousness is your manager saying casually "Oh that's just Sophie. She does that sometimes."
