Banna Appreciation Week
I’d originally been hoping that Anna would reveal her pregnancy in the privacy of their cottage, where they’d be free to react as emotionally as they might wish. However, the more I watched this scene, the more I felt it was pretty perfect, in terms of being true to their relationship, the way it was.
Their entire relationship has, for the most part, been conducted this same way. Their courtship happened in quiet minutes here and there, squeezed between work duties. Their wedding happened in a couple of hours that they managed to get off on a busy workday during the Spanish flu epidemic. Almost all their waking hours are spent at work, moving from task to task and exchanging a few words or glances in passing as they go about their duties, except for the occasional cup of tea. To wait for a truly private moment at home would presumably mean waiting for hours till the end of the day. It’s more important to Anna to ease John’s worry immediately, even if it means quietly revealing her big news in the few moments between her return from London and the entrance of Carson and Hughes.
They might not get much quiet time for themselves during the workday, but they make the most of every bit they are allowed, even if it’s just a quick conversation in the middle of the servants’ hall on a hectic afternoon. And judging from their expressions in photo #3, those brief moments here and there make all the difference in the world. 💘💘💘
