Lucky Dog 1 BL VN Review – Should You Play It?
Lucky Dog 1 is a BL visual novel created by Tennouji, often considered a classic alongside DRAMAtical Murder. Originally released in 2009 in Japanese, the game is now officially available in English thanks to MangaGamer, both on their website and on Steam. After years of waiting, fans can finally experience this iconic title legally and in full.
The story follows Giancarlo “Gian” Bourbon del Monte, famous for his lucky streaks and jailbreaks. At the start, Gian is in prison once again, but this time, the four mafia capos of the CR:5 family are imprisoned alongside him. Gian is tasked with breaking them out. If successful, he’ll earn the title of “Lucky Dog” and become the next leader.
Each capo is a romance option, each with unique personalities and storylines:
Giulio: quiet, unhinged killer with a puppy side for Gian.
Bernardo: dependable, rational, and Gian’s closest friend.
Ivan: hotheaded, brash, and the youngest; a tsundere type.
Luchino: mature, charismatic, and popular with women.
Routes include “good” endings, normal endings, and plenty of bad endings, making choices impactful and sometimes deadly.
Spoiler Section & Personal Experience
I first played Lucky Dog 1 years ago in Japanese and loved its mix of mafia crime, action, and BL romance. When the English release finally arrived, I knew I had to play again.
I went in with this order: Giulio → Bernardo → Ivan → Luchino.
One of the most refreshing BL protagonists. Gian is charming, witty, and surprisingly carefree despite his constant arrests. Across routes, his growth is satisfying: from doubting himself as leader to embracing his role as CR:5’s captain.
My first (and favorite) route. Cold, unstable, and feared by others and yet completely devoted to Gian. His “killer puppy” personality shift was both unsettling and adorable. His route is intense but also heart-melting.
Packed with weighty drama and several bad endings. Bernardo hides deep burdens, and seeing him finally open up to Gian was powerful. His good ending felt earned and touching.
Initially my least favorite, since tsunderes and “rowdy idiots” don’t usually appeal to me, especially with his early homophobia and immaturity. But Ivan’s route surprised me. I laughed the most here, and watching him reluctantly warm to Gian (and Gian learning to trust him) was rewarding. By the end, Ivan won me over.
The route I dreaded but ended up enjoying. His tragic past with his wife and child, plus his womanizing introduction, made me wary. But his development was strong, with Gian helping him finally break free from his grief. The unexpected plot twist near the end sealed the deal as one of the better storylines.
Though mainly the antagonist and more prominent in Bad Egg (the fandisc/DLC), Bakshi’s flamboyant and wild personality is unforgettable. Even as an NPC in Lucky Dog 1, he stands out every time he appears.
My biggest complaint: non-consensual scenes. Gian repeatedly mentions being assaulted by the guys, which felt unnecessary. Even if they’re mafia members, I would have preferred routes where intimacy was built on trust and consent.
Gameplay: Standard VN clicking/reading, but with meaningful choices, tons of bad ends, and replay value. ~30+ hours.
Price: Fair — BL VNs often cost $30–40+, so the price point is solid.
Characters: Diverse cast; even if one doesn’t appeal, there’s likely a favorite for every player.
Art: Classic BL art style from the 2000s. Aged, but stylish and still attractive.
Music: Memorable OST — catchy, atmospheric, and instantly recognizable.
Story: Strong mix of mafia action, steamy romance, and surprisingly deep lore.
Lucky Dog 1 is a classic for a reason. It’s action-packed, full of memorable characters, and blends mafia intrigue with BL romance in a way few other games do. The English release is a gift for fans who’ve been waiting over a decade.
I strongly recommend it to BL VN fans and even to players new to the genre. If you enjoy crime drama, found-family dynamics, or unpredictable routes, Lucky Dog 1 is worth your time.
Verdict: Absolutely yes! Play it!
I also hope MangaGamer brings over the fandisc Bad Egg, which expands routes and introduces new love interests. Until then, Lucky Dog 1 stands tall as one of the best mafia BL visual novels ever released.
