the no recent numbers au: scary movie
content warnings: alcohol mention
it’s fall and there’s been a shockingly low amount of numbers lately
in fact, the past few days have given them no numbers at all
shaw can tell that Root is getting antsy. who wouldn’t at this point?
she decides that maybe root needs a distraction
shaw goes up to Root, suddenly a bit uncomfortable
“seems like our night is gonna be free. would you like to, uh…catch a movie or something?”
root is surprised. normally shaw doesn’t show many signs of interest other than occasionally saving her life
all the movies playing in the nearby theaters are horror flicks. it is close to halloween, after all. ‘tis the season
shaw’s happy, she loves gore
root actually seems a bit on edge
shaw notices, but brushes it off as this just being the first time they’re out together doing something unrelated to work
plus she knows root has a crush on her, and shaw’s never really shown any reciprocation before
technically this still isn’t reciprocation. It’s not a date or anything. they just both needed their minds off the lack of numbers, is all
they settle into their seats, the lights go down, the show starts
at the first jump scare, shaw half laughs at the audience’s reaction
until she sees root’s expression
at the next one, root turns to bury her face in shaw’s shoulder
“hey, you ok? you used to kill people for a living and you’re trying to save the world from an evil AI, how does this scare you?”
“don’t judge me, sameen. people and computers i can work with. spooky monsters who are much harder to fight, not so much”
root flinches again, leaning closer to shaw
shaw wraps her arm around root’s shoulders
“why didn’t you say something? we could have done something else tonight”
root doesn’t answer. she doesn’t want to admit that she didn’t want to miss out on time with shaw
after the movie is over, they walk back to shaw’s apartment
the plan is to just hang out a bit longer, so that root can calm down
shaw goes to the liquor cabinet and pours them both a drink
they talk a lot, more than shaw is usually willing to. but, something about the night makes it feel right
the cozy weather, root’s vulnerability at the movie, the alcohol
it’s about stupid little things really: favorite food, favorite music, best memory…worst memory
an hour later, root still hasn’t left
“yeah…but i’m still to scared to be alone”
shaw can see it in her eyes, there’s no way she’d send her home like this
shaw’s usually big on her alone time
shaw shrugs, “you need someone to protect you from the monsters, bear and i should do the trick”
this is uncharacteristic, but root doesn’t question it
shaw is about to get into bed
root fidgets, sitting on the couch still
root’s eyes are wide with surprise, but shaw seems so matter of fact about it. she knows not to make it too big of a deal
nothing happens, root just curls up next to shaw, taking comfort in her presence. bear is asleep on the floor
when root has a nightmare, shaw wakes her gently and talks to her until she calms down
this time when they go to sleep, shaw’s arm is wrapped around root’s midsection. an extra level of protection
in the morning, shaw isn’t in the bed when root wakes up. she walks out of the bathroom toweling off wet hair
“wanna go grab some breakfast?”
after that, they just sort of slip back into their normal lives
until the next time there’s a lull in numbers
