The 100 rewatch: 2x03 Reapercussions

I’m up to 2x09 in my rewatch, but I didn’t have the time to write and post these over the last 10 days, so I’m going to dump several of them at once here, and a few tomorrow.

This is one of those solid early season 2 episodes that were about setting things up for the rest of the season and about shocking revelations, mostly about Mount Weather and the extent of their evil. (The title here is kind of a giveaway what it reveals.) They may not be as effective on rewatch as the first time, when I was truly shocked and horrified with what we learned here. On the other hand, what helps on rewatch is that I didn't feel impatient for all the characters to finally meet again and be together in the same place, as I did back then during the first four episodes.

Rating: 8/10

The most notable things in this episode was the cliffhanger with Lincoln's capture by the Reapers, and big revelation or at least strong hints about what is going to happen to him, with the injections and the first mention of the "Cerberus program". Pretty apt name, because the Reapers kind of are monsters on the entrance into hell. The secret rooms in Mount Weather where Grounders were kept in cages, drained and then dumped like trash to die, really do look like hell.

Another reference to hell was Maya showing Jasper the paintings that Dante (sic) keeps, including William Blake's painting of (Dante's) Inferno.

Back in season 1, we learned the words that Arkers say as a prayer/goodbye to the dying ("In peace you may leave the shore...(...) May we meet again", and in this episode, it's the first time we hear the Grounder words "Your fight is over", as Anya mercy kills a dying, drained Grounder who was obviously someone she knew. I believe that's the second mercy kill in the show, after Clarke's mercy kill of Atom in 1x03.

Anya was wondering "What are they doing to us?" - a confirmation that the Grounders have no idea what exactly the Mountain Men are doing to those they capture and why, because, presumably, no one ever came back to tell the story.

When Dante lied to Jasper and Monty that Clarke was in the psych ward after a mental breakdown, Jasper felt bad “The last time I saw her, I told her she was crazy. I didn’t mean…”, which struck me as kind of ironic, knowing that it's Jasper who's going to have a mental breakdown.

This is a big episode for Kane, who finally starts moving away from his law-enforcer mindset and looking for different and more peaceful solutions. The annoying Major Byrne was a character that was kind of representing the old Kane, insisting on the strict word of law, and, with the argument that the order cannot be maintained differently, convincing Kane to publicly physically punish Abby by shock-lashing for letting the kids go on a mission to save Clarke and others - even though Kane obviously didn't want to do it and felt very upset while it was happening. But then he decided they couldn't go on like that anymore: “We cannot continue this way and hope to survive” and went on a diplomatic mission, leaving Abby as acting chancellor/

While Kane is becoming peacemaker, Finn is turning into a war criminal, starting here with his shooting of the captured Grounder on the spot after the interrogation.

 I think Bellamy's changed and more positive attitude to Finn in S2 was mostly because they had fought together and Finn had jumped in to help him against Tristan in the S1 finale, but for a while, Finn just seemed really driven and determined. But at this point, he's starting to understand that Finn is out of control. Bellamy warning Finn not to go too far as Finn was threatening the prisoner with a gun, suggests he's rethinking his season 1 philosophy of "who we are and who we need to be to survive are two different things" and may be regretting the torture of Lincoln. Bellamy also makes it clear he has a moral code (which is in line with the Geneva Convention - even though I have no idea if the Arkers would still know what that is). and understands the difference between killing in fight and killing a prisoner, while Murphy was advocating that they kill the prisoner, but Finn took the decision out of his hands before he could stop it.

Body count:

1 Arker at Camp Jaha who was the father of one of the Delinquents kept in MW, accidentally shot by a guard;

a Grounder that Anya mercy kills;

other Grounders killed by Reapers; a few Reapers killed in the fight with the Grounders;

Delano, the one-eyed Grounder prisoner, killed by Finn.

season two episode 3, aka ‘Reapercussions’ aka ‘MY FAVOURITE EPISODE IN THE ENTIRE SHOW PROBABLY’

honestly every single storyline in this one is gold - Anya and Clarke teaming up to escape Mt Weather, Kane and Abby dealing with the consequences of their choices, Octavia and Indra meeting  for the first time...I am always on the edge of my goddamn seat right from start to finish

I love every single Clarke/Anya scene in this episode honestly, they were such a fantastic team, with such amazing chemistry and believable conflict

ahahaha I love how Kane knows immediately that Abby was the one who helped the others escape

it’s just so...exciting?? to see all these storylines kick off...I honestly can’t remember another time in this show where I was SO invested in every single scene, where I was desperate to know what would happen to every character...

MONTY I LOVE YOU, YOU ARE TOO GOOD FOR THIS WORLD

honestly I low-key wish I wasn’t so drunk for this, I adore this episode so much

‘The most respected person in this camp’ - verbatim quote from S2 Marcus Kane there, and honestly an aspect of Abby I wish we had seen more? The way that the people of the Ark would love and respect her as their chief doctor, the woman who healed them when they were sick, the Councillor who stood up for them....Abby Griffin would have been SUCH an important figure on the Ark, and I wish we had gotten more of a feeling of that going forward tbh

god DAMN Abby looks so good, I don’t mean to keep harping on about this but I can’t help but be a Useless Lesbian

also I didn’t mention this before but this whole ‘creepy growing paranoia inside Mt Weather’ storyline with Jasper and Monty is ace too

I mean this episode just has it all

Clarke and Anya was the One True Pairing we were denied tbh - I mean...I liked the whole Clexa thing fine but these two had such sparks flying and Anya was so relentlessly unimpressed by Clarke it made for such a great pairing

on that note, Indra and Octavia are one of the great relationships of this show

actually there is something really fascinating in the line from that random Mt Weather dude when he says ‘Get the hell away from her!’ to the Reaper that is threatening Clarke in the tunnels; it really doubles down on this idea that the Mount Weather people have so dehumanised the Reapers that even Clarke as a Rebel Element is seen as inherently worth protecting against the Savage Monsters

OH SHIT THE SHOCKLASHING SCENE OH NO

friendly reminder that Jackson my son was apparently ready to throw down with Major Byrne when she came to  arrest Abby

okay well it is time for my Favourite Scene of my Favourite Episode

it’s just...it’s the way that Abby and Marcus both understand each so perfectly, and the way that neither of them apologise for their actions, and yet they come to a kind of detente anyway, and the level of absolute trust and respect they have for each other even in the most dire of circumstances...

Kane knows why Abby went behind his back and gave the guns to those kids. Abby knows why Kane had her shocklashed, And there's this sense that they don't judge or resent each other for those choices, but accept each other for who they are, and only believe that they can do better next time

also Abby is still hot as hell in this scene sorry to be shallow but God Damn

also also Marcus Kane’s little smile when Abby says ‘I’ll go with you’ is a Big Mood, like...he loves her so much?? Whether you believe he realises it as something romantic yet or not, you can’t deny the obvious affection he has for her

sidebar, but ‘Chancellor Abby’ is a great track from the OST, and I have it on my ipod

legit, this episode has five distinct separate storylines  and they’re all incredibly compelling and complicated and wonderful and I love this episode?? So much???
