You’re Not That Monster

Pairing: Chris Evans x reader

Word Count: ~800

Summary: The weight of a new role is taking its toll on Chris. Thankfully, he’s got you there to remind him who he really is.

Warnings: anxiety (Chris), Chris doubting himself

A/N: this is it, my first ever fic! HUGE thanks to @fallinforevans​ for being the sweetest human ever and encouraging me to post this!

     You take a deep breath, enjoying the smell of homemade pizza in your oven. Dodger appreciates it too, if the way his nose keeps wiggling around while he snuggles next to you is any indication. You’ve been enjoying this time in New York, because it is essentially a vacation for you, but you know it is taking its toll on Chris. 

     He’d asked you to come with him while he filmed this role, because he knew this was a possibility. And you knew there was no way that you’d let him go through this on his own. This role on Law and Order: SVU was a far cry from America’s Sweetheart, Steve Rogers, and he was excited to get to play someone so different. But from the second he’d been offered the guest role as the villain of the week, you knew he was a little worried too, about where it would take him mentally. 

     You close the book you’d been reading when you hear the door open, and call out to your husband, “Hey, babe. There’s fresh pizza in the oven and beer in the fridge for you. It took 3 different stops today, but I made sure to find your favorite.” 

     “Mmph” he just grunts as he drops his keys on the counter and heads straight for the bathroom, not even sparing a glance at you and Dodger. It wasn’t that you’d expected a happy and bubbly greeting, but you’d expected maybe an entire word. 

     You let out a deep breath when you hear the shower turn on and give Dodger a scratch behind his ears, “sounds like dad had a rough day, Bubba. I wish we could snap our fingers and make this easier for him”. 

     You decide to give Chris the time to be alone and process his day, but when the timer for your pizza goes off, you realize how long he’s been in there. A quick detour to the kitchen to turn the oven off would keep the pizza from burning, and then you make your way to the bathroom to check on Chris. All you can hear is the water hitting his broad shoulders, and he doesn’t seem to be moving much, if at all. You quickly rid yourself of your clothes, and stepped into the back of the shower, in front of him.

     “Chris?” you ask quietly as you join him.

     He just mumbles, unable to look at you.

     You reach up and run your fingers lightly over the tattoo of Dodger’s name on his chest. “Chris, hey, it's me... Come back to me...” 

     His eyes meet yours, finally, and you can see the tears threatening to spill from them. “I... I was awful...” he finally manages to say. 

     “Babe, from the day you started acting, you’ve never been awful” you reply, misunderstanding what he means.

     He shakes his head no, not having the strength to stop and correct you, but needing to say what he meant, now that he has started. “I was awful, despicable... I had to do disgusting things... and I had to like them...”

     You raised yourself to your tiptoes as you ran your fingers through his hair, lightly scratching at his scalp, making him sigh and close his eyes. You take advantage of the tiny bit of progress to give him a gentle, lingering kiss. When his eyes open again and find yours, you whisper against his lips, “That wasn’t you. You’re not that monster, Chris. I can’t imagine having to think like him for two weeks, but you’re almost done, and then we can be rid of him forever. But it's not you. You are good. You are kind, considerate, the most caring man I’ve ever met. You are generous and genuine and gentle. You, my sweet man, are too good of an actor, if you have yourself believing you could ever be like that monster.” The soft smile on your lips as you finish your speech has him slowly regaining his sense of self. 

     “I just... I still feel dirty...”

     You nod and reach for his body wash, “then let's get you cleaned up. We can scrub the dirt and ick from today away, and then finish the night with some good beer, GREAT pizza, and Dodger has been anxiously awaiting your return all day... I think he could use some cuddles with his dad...”

     As you start to wash Chris, you can feel the stress and anxiety working their way from his body and running down the drain with the sweat and dirt of the day. You know you’ve helped when he chuckles, “you know... if Bubba wants cuddles... they say dogs are a good judge of character...”. 

     Your smile only grows when Chris finally smiles back. “That dog idolizes you, Chris. Don’t you ever doubt it”
