Summary: Callie is a famous film actress and Arizona is one of the top surgeons. What happens when they meet after 12 years? Are they destined to be together? Will they realize their undeniable feelings for each other?
Note: Before I start the review, I just have to point out that the author’s note on the first chapter says, “I JUST HOPE THAT SARA DOES NOT LEAVE BREAKING OUR CALZONA HEARTS.” Welp.
Sugarkane Review:
Okay, so I like this story, but I like it in a weird way. As far as grammar and spelling go, it leaves a bit to be desired. There are missing articles here and there that make sentences and dialogue sound stilted and almost robotic at times, but it definitely has a certain charm that is just undeniable to me.
Okay, so let me get to the plot. It starts off with Callie’s nephew Nick getting hurt. He’s rushed to the hospital where Callie, a famous actress, comes back into contact with her childhood bestfriend/girlcrush Arizona, a pediatric surgeon at the hospital. They haven’t seen each other since they were 17, but there are still a lot of strong feelings between them. I really do feel the their passion, and I really do believe that they are into each other. So that part really is done well. Does the way that it’s written take away from it slightly? Yes. But then it adds back a bit of unintentional humor that I gotta say was extremely enjoyably. Here are some examples:
Examples of Unintentional Humor:
"Yes, you fool! Who made you doctor?" Callie asks annoyingly. She hates this Blake- she is so annoying.
"NO- Mike is right. I bet she has," George says in his feminine voice.
"Babies are annoying, demanding, confused and sometimes selfish too in getting what they want…”
"Robbins, I'm not interested in your vagina stories." (this one was probably intentional)
Anyways, for the first three chapters, they keep referencing this vague thing that happened 12 years ago that made Arizona resent Callie. Finally, in Chapters 4 and 5 though, the writer gives us flashbacks, and we learn what happened. Basically, and I’m summarizing this a lot, Callie was too afraid to admit her feelings publicly, and ended up causing Arizona a lot of pain. Now, Callie is trying to make up for the pain she’s caused and get Arizona back into her life. So she gets Arizona’s number and texts her persistently even though she never gets a response, and also, sends her donuts as an apology. Eventually during an action scene in a movie she’s acting in, Callie slips and falls, injuring herself. When she makes it to the hospital, she demands to see Arizona, and they share a very, very heart-warming scene, that I honestly enjoyed. It doesn’t last long because Callie faints is rushed into surgery. The story leaves off with Arizona reevaluating her feelings for the other woman and wondering if she should give Callie another chance.
Okay, so here’s the breakdown. Is the plot of this story interesting? Yeah. Is the grammar and spelling good? Eh. Is the execution done well? In some ways yes, in some ways no. Did I enjoy reading this story? Yep. Also, just side note, I was reading the author’s notes and my god this author is so freaking sweet. I just, omg, the nicest.
