In this version of Tumblr you've rolled out I get reblog notifications meant for the original poster. But no notifications when I am the original poster.

I don't want that!

I want notifications on things I post! Why would I get notified about other people's posts? Why can't I even see if I go looking at my original post what other people have added to my posts?

I don't know who ordered you to implement this, but please tell them to undo it.

Splitting the reblog notes will change the meaning of reblogging with an add in the first place—which is the cornerstone of Tumblr. It changes the focus from community to the fucking numbers. This changes how we perceive and exist in the platform.

Adding something will only seem worth it if it feels good enough to go viral, which will make interactions performative. We’re all already too hyperaware of how we look to others at all times. Nobody will want to add to a post because they’ll be embarrassed of not having enough notes, of being seen ‘trying to do something’. We’ll no longer be creating something together organically, no longer feeling like our contributions are all equally worthy of voicing, and instead silently trying to outdo each other. Authenticity, organicity, and spontaneity will be suffocated.

Tumblr has lasted this long because it’s community-oriented. It is the last social social media, and that’s why we stay. We’re more authentic here than anywhere else because “engagement numbers” don’t lead us to filter ourselves as much, to exist in third-person. This kills a quintessential source of that sense of community.

If you want to let adders know that their add is being reblogged, which I did always think was a feature we were missing, just implement it to the notification tab! Please please please DO NOT change how it is displayed!

these new porn bots posing as trans women keep using not just random tags and tags with "trans" in them, but also tags like "trans man, trans male, cute crossdresser". it gives off the vibe of some transphobe who doesn't know shit is running it. or idk. maybe that pleases conservatives who will jack off to tr*nny porn but can't have it be validating or consensual

honestly, with the amount of new bot accounts that do that now, those ban waves of trans women and their followers might be from targeting tags with higher bot activity. tumblr often mass bans possible bots, then they go through the appeals to correct mistakes. it happened to me before and happens randomly to everybody. this might be why there's so much doubt from people that this is targeting trans women specifically

this includes trying to ban "bots" following eachother and interacting with eachother to look like real users. those 200 or so followers of a trans woman's blog getting banned might be an example of that. they might even be looking for words like "trans" in bio to determine possible bots. it'll even flag clothed selfies if they trip up tumblr's very innacurate (but free to use!) porn-detecting algoritm. and when there actually is some amount of being horny on main, even within guidelines, anything queer gets punished way more

of course having transphobic (and very ineffective) third-party moderation and a CEO that is actively hostile to trans women doesn't help.

if trans women aren't able to get moderation mistakes resolved, this opens the door for malicious reports to take their blogs down. the timing of people flooding the feedback forms about the reblog change might've led staff to automate the whole report process to speed things up, leading to the same transphobic moderation decisions but at once. I sure have gotten 99% automated messages any time I've reported something, asked a question or tried to fix a problem

If anyone wants some inspiration on what to write on their feedback support ticket, here's what I submitted:

I really wish you'd stop making unhelpful UI changes and focus on your actual issue: moderation. The UI worked perfectly up until the notes format, reblog menu, and now the worst change yet; seperate note counts for reblogs. You must understand this is completely unwanted, unecessary, and for many, a final nail in the coffin for an already dying art and fandom community. The previous format was what made tumblr unique, and what made people love it over other social media formats. seeing what everyone has to say and seeing how much reach a post actually has by the unbroken note count was a core feature of tumblr. as you've rolled out this feature, I can already feel how it's made tumblr feel more empty and isolated. a mutual reblogs a post with something to say, and I want to join in on the topic, only to open the notes and see that it's completely empty, with no comments to read or note count to see. how am I meant to find out what other people are saying? click through every single reblog in the chain to see if anyone else left any comments? that's an awful way to run this site… it's incredibly frustrating and unintuitive. I don't know why you're so hell bent on making all these changes when there are so many glaring moderation issues. tumblr is rife with bots, bigots, and harrassment campaigns, but those things run rampant while people get banned for posting classical art nudes, being trans, or making slightly risqué jokes. the bot problem is already making tumblr unusable, if you make tumblr feel even harder to use by implimenting this new notes format change, for a lot of people, myself included, it will be the final push we need to drive us to pinterest and blue sky and leave tumblr behind with a heavy heart, because we love this site, but the way you act really leaves people feeling like you don't care for your dedicated userbase whatsoever. when you do superficial changes like this and leave the glaring issues untouched, we feel like we're not valued here at all. it shows that you have the means to change things but choose to ignore the things that matter. please do better, we're trying our best to be patient with you and maintain our beautiful digital eco system and symbiotic relationship between staff and users that makes tumblr what it is, but we're tired. we're frustrated. there's no tumblr without its users, there's no tumblr without staff, but you need to throw us a bone here. you need to do something that's in our best interests for once.
