It’s so hard for us to write this, but unfortunately, due to time constraints and the group growing to become a size we have difficulty managing, Rebuild is going to be closing down. We have absolutely loved writing with you all, but no longer feel we have the time and creativity to dedicate to this group which is extremely unfair to the people who have put forth so much effort and talent.
We truly have loved this experience and we’re sorry to have to do this. If any of you would like to continue threads, you’re free to do so and we would love to see them.
At 8pm on the dot, Karl Orse stepped onto a small stage that had been erected in the back of the room. He approached the podium in the center, and adjusted the microphone. It took only a moment for the conversation in the room to fade, though the tension remained. “My fellow citizens,” he began. “The Accords and Accountability Panel welcomes you to this evening of peace. We hope you are enjoying both the delectable refreshments and the company of your fellow citizens, no matter where they may stand on the issues. But we did not come here for pleasantries, we have gathered together to seek solutions. In that spirit, we now invite all of you to step forward. To ask your questions, state your opinions, let your voice be heard. Too often in troubled times we forget that we are a community, that we all are human beings with a common goal -- a peaceful resolution to the problems plaguing our city.” He paused, staring out at the crowd with his pale, light eyes. Mouth drawn into a tight smile. “Who’s first?”
Send your questions (in-character) here or here, or if you wish to write a longer piece, tag @accordsandaccountabilitypanel in a starter! The admins will be stepping in to reply as quickly as we can! This will continue for the duration of the event, or until the admins specify otherwise.
We have a couple of very exciting announcements on this beautiful Monday.
Firstly, we’re absolutely ecstatic to announce that Lola will be helping us with adminning going into the future! She’s already been an amazing addition to the team.
Following that up, we have created a poll in order to allow you guys to help us choose our season 4 main plot. We have some awesome suggestions, but they will affect your characters deeply and we want everyone to feel comfortable writing the plots out! We’ll be giving everyone until Thursday at 5 PM PST in order to get their responses in. That way, you have time to contemplate your preferred main plot.
Please like this so we know that you’ve read everything and please thank Lola for helping us make Rebuild the best it can be for you guys!
“Sometimes, if you want to change a man's mind, you have to change the mind of the man next to him first.”
The party, as Doom had intended, was a stunning success. The civilians and superheroes were mingling, trusting that Doom and his military were going to keep them safe. Of course for the evening, the civilians and superheroes would be protected from any bodily harm, but the party was not solely for Doom’s public to enjoy themselves and realize how trustworthy he is. With the public outcry, Doom realized that he was not the only one invested in such… transparency. New Yorkers demanded that their superheroes aid his cause, and as such, he intended to release the names of those were forthcoming. The others, fortunately, would inevitably bend to the people’s will. Superheroes were obligated to fall into the hands of the people.
As Doom entered on the stage, the music immediately stopped playing and the crowd fell into a familiar silence. His appearances were admittedly sparse, but when they occurred, people were always thrilled to see Doom and hear what he had to say. Power was a funny thing and on Battleworld, it all belonged to him, particularly after his loyal subjects forced the heroes to comply to his will by signing the list. Doom had no intention of forcing them superheroes into anything -- quite the contrary, it drew a clear line of what threats would have to be subtly eliminated first. Those that signed were malleable, willing for the best interest of the majority, while those that refused would never join his cause.
“Good evening everyone,” Doom greeted, speaking clearly into the microphone. He forced an uncharacteristic smile on his features, fitting the mood of the evening thus far. “Firstly, I would like to thank all of you who have aided our noble pursuit for resources. We had enough to host this event and plenty more to spare. My government and I will be implementing a fair system to share resources among each and everyone of you, but we will discuss that in the morning. Currently, there’s no need to ruin our festivities, is there?” The crowd forced a chuckle in agreement and he nodded once in response. “Secondly, I would like to thank you all for coming. Without you New Yorkers, we would not be building some semblance of a civilization. Lastly, in the interest of protecting that very civilization, I must speak once more about transparency.”
Interested, the crowd murmured in response and looked to each other for an answer that would not come. No one knew of Doom’s intention to leak the list. Alexis was an excellent advisor, one he trusted minimally, but she was interested in protecting their heroes unlike Doom. Alexis had not personally experienced what a nuance superheroes truly were. “Without honesty, we will not survive our isolation,” he began. “New York needs to work closely in order for our community to thrive. We have no communication with Earth, with our friends, our allies, and that is a threat that I take seriously. Our primary means of defence is our superheroes, and while many have agreed to aid me and signed the list, many have not. Currently, I intend to take the only realistic step I can to change that.” His voice turned sorrowful and he paused, allowing the emotion to settle. It was all falsified, but to the public, it would look realistic. “I am truly, deeply sorry to do this, but I have no choice. I have been waiting patiently, but I refuse to risk any more of my public’s lives.” Doom raised his hand in silent command and suddenly, a list appeared on the wall behind him.
The crowd started loudly speaking, debating what had been revealed. On the broadcast behind Doom was the list of the superhero that had signed, though the details of their powers were not present. In order to clarify, Doom raised his hand and silence once again settled on the crowd. “This is the list of incredible, brave heroes that have agreed to list their powers with me, thus keeping us as a public safe. These individuals are incredible and I will be rewarding them accordingly once it’s possible. Those that have not are leaving New York City in danger, the Daily Bugle is correct in that assessment, and I hope that hearing the emotional pleas from myself and public will sway their judgment.” Of course Doom didn’t count on the superheroes changing their mind, they were a pigheaded bunch, but it would make his primary enemies obvious. “Thank you to all that have supported my list and my attempts to keep our city safe and working closely with me to do so. Please help me in convincing the others this is a necessary thing,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion still. “I love you all and from here on in, I have every intention of being more forthcoming. Goodnight New York, please continue to enjoy the party.” As Doom finished, he smiled once again at the civilians and then quietly left.
Once he rounded the corner away from the stage, Alexis cornered him, demanding, “What have you done?” As he suspected, she was angry about the situation.
“What is necessary,” he replied, moving past her easily. From Doom’s perspective, it was the only reasonable course of action, and it would guarantee his success.
What’s happened:
Doom has made the list of superheroes public, implying that they’re working closely with him in the process
Doom has promised to be honest going into the future in an attempt to help the public
After the sudden release of the list, things between Doom and Alexis Chamberlain are far more heated
Prompts:
Despite having a fairly public identity, Character A made the decision not to list their powers. When someone in the crowd recognizes them, the terrified public turns on them and Character B must help them escape.
Character A, a listed hero, is disgusted by the leaking of the list. They set out to find Doom and confront him while Character B struggles to talk them down.
The outraged public begins to get rowdy, and Characters A and B take it upon themselves to attempt to quell the crowd’s fears.
Intent on doing damage control, Character A asks Character B for help in deciding what should be done regarding the list’s leak.
Character A, previously unlisted, makes the decision to list their abilities in order to save themselves from the fallout. They ask Character B, who is already listed, to assist them.
Due to the chaos, Character A makes the decision to leave the party and attempts to convince Character B to join them. Character B wants to stay and assist with the fallout, leading to an argument.
After a few days to reassess the situation, Character A and Character B discuss the merits of signing/not signing, depending on their position.
Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory.
New York City successfully had resources, and as a result, Doom had every intention of celebrating. Of course that wasn’t his only victory -- quite the contrary, Doom had numerous things to celebrate, including the general public’s support. The demand to list their powers with him, giving him every insight into his primary enemy, the superheroes of New York City, was echoing across the city, loud and obvious. There were countless articles written, protests taking place, and lastly, Doom wanted to celebrate the fact that heroes were slowly beginning to trust him as well. He had yet to communicate closely with them, knowing avoidance was crucial with numerous telepaths and ‘geniuses,’ but soon the time would come.
First Doom wanted to reward the public, his supporters and naysayers, and to do so he sent out invitations to a lavish party hosted at his home, the Empire State Building. With resources found in the wasteland, his staff created a small but lovely menu, and a large area was erected with decorations and a large banner that simply said, ‘Thank you New York City!’ From the outside, the party looked like one being thrown solely to recognize their small victory, a reminder that New Yorkers would persevere. In actuality, it was an opportunity for Doom to bond with the public and later reveal the superheroes that had listed, creating more pressure against those that had not.
Alexis Chamberlain was not supportive of Doom’s plan, clearly stating that Doom would only further isolate his supporters and encourage the overall distrust, but her opinion was completely ignored. Doom personally ensured that invitations were sent out to every superhero and resident, gathering the largest audience he possibly could. The party would be a success and his plan flawless as they all had been thus far.
Weeks later, guests began arriving to Doom’s celebration, and staff circled closely around, handing out food and beverage. The demons were kept at bay by Doom’s small personal military (and his orders), allowing a much safer environment, and the curfew was lifted for the evening. From above, Doom kept a close eye on the guests, not yet revealing his presence. He wanted this night memorable, he wanted the civilians complicit, and that would take time. Their tension and skepticism would have to be released.
Live music began playing loudly and Doom continued watching, waiting for the opportune moment for his plan to begin.
How to participate in the event:
Currently, Doom is just intending for people to enjoy themselves. Your character can find a date, attend with friends, watch the band, dance, eat, etc. We encourage people to post closed and open starters (keeping in mind our rules regarding this) and just have some light threads! Why so serious?
In roughly a week, we will be posting the second half of the event/plot drop and things will become much more dramatic, but no spoilers! Right now, just get your fluff on and remember to tag all your threads/starters/etc as ‘rebuildevent5′!
This is just a reminder that we do expect that our members reply to a minimum of two open starters before posting their own. Unfortunately, we have quite a few with very few notes in the tags and we really would like to see that changed so everyone feels included!
Just a head's up, Tumblr seems to be eating asks on top of not showing notifications. If you've sent an ask to the main and we haven't responded, chances are we didn't receive the question! Until the issue is resolved, we recommend sending any asks/apps again if they're not responded to within a few hours or using the IM system to ensure that we're aware of what you've sent.
We know this is inconvenient, and we can only hope that Tumblr will resolve the issue soon. Thanks for understanding!
Thanks to everyone that contributed their opinion regarding another mashup! We all really appreciate your input.
To kick things off, as always, we’re going to ask everyone to send us an ask (we can keep it in our inbox so we don’t miss anyone that way! about who they would like to participate! Please keep in mind that the characters who have listed VS those who have not is very uneven! Our aim here is to get more characters to ultimately list their powers. So with that in mind, we would really appreciate limiting some of the characters that are participating otherwise we won’t have enough!
For example, if one of your characters is never going to list, the thread is going to be a little counterproductive when we could pair one that may potentially agree! However, all sides of the argument are relevant and we support your decisions. We just don’t want anyone to miss out!
As it stands, we only have 15 characters that have listed their powers. If you’d like to before the mashup begins, please let us know!
Now without further ado, as mentioned above, please send us an ask with who you would like to be in the mashup! Pairings will be posted on Saturday so everyone can plot and write to their hearts desire. Thanks again everyone!
