So I liked Supergirl, I just feel like it suffered from the same thing as most superhero movies these days, and that's how breathless it is. It's a mad dash from beginning to end, it's a constant race to cram as much action and fight scenes into two hours as possible, and I just think... Yes, the plot is literally about her racing against time, but I just think the story could have used some quiet parts where things slow down and genuinely feel slow, which could contribute to that panicky feeling of achieving The Goal in time. I never really felt concerned, because in what was shown, she or Ruthye were always moving, always doing SOMETHING. For me the emotion would have connected more if I'd felt some of that frustration that comes in the pauses, when you have to catch your breath, but you don't want to, because it's not contributing to The Goal (or is it???). Anyway, I really think these new movies need more breathing space. And I don't mean when nothing is happening. I just mean... stuff that's not a fight scene, and doesn't turn into one either. Like... a scene of them/Kara fixing the shuttle! Making sure people got their stuff back. Waving off people's thanks. Being cranky and impatient with the pilot rebooting stuff. That would be what I'm talking about. Sure she's Supergirl, but she can't freeze time, so of course the delay is hard and stressful, and she has to breathe through it. Like all the rest of us do.
And no, this is not a knock against Supergirl specifically, just me musing over trends that I see demonstrated in this movie as well as others. I thought Supergirl was a fun movie, and good for a girl's movie night.
