Recipe #13 - Copper Gorge Taffy
Review: Unlucky recipe number 13, of course it wouldn't turn out well. Just like how the Shadow Ranch cake wasn't really cake, Copper Gorge Taffy isn't really taffy, it's hard candy. But that's partially my fault.
The recipe I found online suggested I wait for the taffy to cool before I pulled it. It also included photos of people working on taffy barehanded...Well I don't know what planet those people are from because this seems impossible to me. The taffy I made was only pull-able when it was really hot, otherwise it had the consistency of hard plastic or even glass, brittle not stretchy. Because of this I was only able to pull each flavored strand for 2-3 minutes because I was afraid I would burn my hands.
If I let any taffy cool down in the slightest it would be permanently in whatever shape it was in. I had to reheat the lemon and orange taffy twice to get it to be stretchy again. Still though, I could not stretch the taffy for the recommended 15 minutes without burning my hands. I tried using oven mits but the taffy would stick to them.
In the end, the result was pretty but not chewy at all. If you tried to chew these, you'd break your teeth. But they taste good! You just have to suck on them. In retrospect I probably should have made taffy-on-a-stick instead of regular saltwater taffy. Ah well.
Recipe for Copper Gorge Taffy:
(I imagine this recipe is fine but prep is iffy)
Here's my source
2 cups sugar
2 tbsp cornstarch
1 cup light corn syrup
2 tsp glycerin (optional)
^I left this out which may have something to do with the texture failing^
3/4 cup water
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp salt
1 tsp flavoring
3 drops food coloring
By the way, the three flavors of my taffy are lemon, vanilla, and orange. If you decide to make taffy, you can pick your own flavors and colors! And remember, if you want your taffy to turn out chewy, you will have to look beyond my source page for better prep instructions.
