Riverdale - betty voice i’m the whore of babylon. from the book of revelation. cheryl voice i am cheryl blossom. queen of the bees. veronica voice i’m the she-wolf of wall-street. they’re all batshit and it’s beautiful. people don’t like when i talk about riverdale like its good but embrace the camp and enjoy all the women who desperately want to fuck each other but can’t. on account of this being riverdale.
Madoka Magica - this was my first anime! magical girls i’m sure you’ve heard of them. not 100% sure if this fits your criteria because you said insane woman characters plural and it’s basically just homura that spends the entire show in a psychological pressure cooker but! 10/10 would recommend along with the movie sequel.
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier - the titular character is dead but she left behind a haunting and a housekeeper in mourning. my liner notes contain the sentence “mrs. danvers cunting it up at manderley” which isn’t the plot of the book but it’s not NOT the plot of the book
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters/The Handmaiden - choose your fighter here. there are advantages to reading the book first and advantages to watching the movie first. toxic fucked up lesbians. crime. wrt the handmaiden I like the studio cut better but the director’s cut is easier to find on pirating sites and also inexplicably contains a deeply funny cartwheel from the primary antagonist.
Harlots - kind of like if bridgerton was good and all about sex workers. I haven’t seen the 3rd season and heard there were mixed reviews but I can recommend the first two. you wanna explore the tensions inherent to the structures of marriage and family through the backdrop of competing brothels in 18th century london sooo bad.
Slay the Princess - one woman in particular! if you’ve always wanted to simultaneously be torn apart atom by atom, rescue a girl from a terrible fate, and enter an arms race with a construct made entirely of knives, this one is for you. plays around a lot with the concepts of change, death, archetypes and storytelling
The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir - this is quintessential tumblr lesbian fiction so I’m sure you’ve heard the news but we’re gonna include it here just in case. I like Nona the best but the other books bang as well and have an excellent batshit woman quotient.
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn - this one has grown on me over time honestly. the women are all horrible and unwell (in more ways than one! lol). thriller slash mystery set in the american south. journalist returns to her hometown to investigate the disappearance of two young girls, and then things get worse. once you’re done with the book go ahead and watch the show too.
Jessica Jones, but only S1 - i heart mind control narratives. i also heart when lesbians get divorced. more of this please. jessica jones gets to be all the things your traditional noir detective is desperately trying to be and she does it all while engaged in psychological warfare with david tennant.
