Fred Phelps died today.
He seemed a sad, angry man.
His tactics brought a load of hurt down on people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, and on military families trying to bury their loved ones in peace.
With painful rhetoric and hate-filled signs, Phelps and his crew picketed my church on Mother’s Day the year I was ordained.
As a member of the staff of ReconcilingWorks who strives to dwell in graceful engagement,
as a member of the clergy roster of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America,
and as a Christian trying to live justice, love, and grace,
I say to those who stand in hatred, to those who pray inside,
to those who run away, and to those who have to hide:
“God loves you. I love you. And there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.”
God is God. Love is love. Justice is justice. Grace is grace.
And so it goes through eternity and past infinity.
