Cassettes In A Record Box
303 , Acid and Madchester 88
"it didn't really have a beginning middle or end it just was" carl cox on the Roland 303 .
When starting this project i was adamant to cover the late 80’s early 90’s scene as i remember growing up during the revolution that was the rave scene , but it really kicked off around the year of my birth in 1988 with the second summer of love in 1988-89.
As the journalist Sharon walker describes in her article “30 years since the second summer of love” (cited below) as one of the most life changing moments arriving at heaven night club in 1988 to experience Acid house for the first time flashing lights Lazers and smiley face T-shirts. Adorned the dancefloor. As the scene started to emerge in the UK, it had already begun in the United States particularly in Chicago and Detroit respectively. And the one common denominator was the Roland TB 303 to the extent that there is a TB303 day to celebrate the squelchy baselines (cited below).
Tracks like “Acid tracks” by Phurture , “Voodoo Ray “by A Guy Called Gerard and Marshell Jefferson’s “Move your body “became staples in the history of the 303 and showed the diversity of what the 303 was capable of , in Chicago they were using it to make house music and in detroit they were using it to make techno citations included below .
Although a commercial failure when released in 1981 as a synthetic bassline creator to mimic a bass guitar , it found a home in the second-hand market in the middle to late 80’s kicking off what we now call house music and techno , but for a very brief period at the end of the 80’s it was the cornerstone of Acid house and the second summer of love 1988-1989 .
In the UK the acid house scene coincided with the “Madchester” era of the electronic dance scene. And no bigger club at the time was called The Haçienda , known as the nightclub, that changed Britan , founded by Tony Wilson of Factory Records and New Order formally Joy Division in 1982, for many years the club struggled financially and was kept afloat by the money put into it by New order , it went on to become one of the most culturally significant nightclubs in the UK’s history, hosting a litany of homegrown and international artists until its closure in 1997 .
