rec me something to read, i'm dying squirtle

some kind of au with fun worldbuilding perhaps? but still romance (or other intense relationship) focused. with characters who are trying to be kind. D/s always good, love a good omegaverse, but want something that has stuff beyond the sex too.

hey i had abdominal surgery last month for an organ trying to explode, and i'm having THE worst time with my media choices like here's a cartoon about being stranded on an alien planet by the way alien parasites make your organs explode mirroring my own organs just being disgustingly inflamed, here's an alternate history book where it turns out doctors put some kind of freaky sampling device in your abdomen and just leave it there feeding the small paranoid voice in the back of my brain about stuff left in me, this actualplay show has a fight scene inside the body of a zombie bear making me aware of the incisions in my own skin, etc etc

like maybe the problem is my genre is scifi i wouldn't run into this in regency romances probably? idk

anyway I am looking for sff recs (preferably audiobook or podcast at the moment) which contain ZERO of the following:

body horror

parasites

there's something physically inside you

medical malpractice

actually let's just say surgery in general

sadly also transhumanist/cyborg implants are off the table for me right now

hm. also dietary restrictions

eating people alive. like i wouldn't have guessed this would set me off until it definitely did, I have GOT to stop listening to "from the creators of welcome to night vale"

and I mean. I still want to be listening to sci-fi/fantasy. so idk does anyone have a rec for a good interstellar political thriller or something

I want to read more murderbot books

I just listened to all the audiobooks which counts as my 3rd read through of the series and I still want to read it.

anyone have recommendations for a series that has a similarly compelling main character\narrator action story? preferably sci-fi or fantasy and not romance focused.

examples of other authors I've liked include -T Kingfisher Clockwork Boys- Maggie Stiefvater The Scorpio Races and her Dreamer Trilogy-

are any of Martha Wells other books as good as the Murderbot Diaries?

Okay but seriously, does anybody have decent recs for...I don’t even know the words for the thing I’m looking for, I’ve just been craving it for days.  Platonic sex?  Friends-with-benefits that is the main relationship focus of the story, but maybe not the main plot focus, or maybe it is but then the focus is on how much it isn’t a drama, and the characters don’t fall in love at the end (or maybe they decide to give romance a try, why not, but it’s not some Big Thing, it’s ‘today/this week/our lives have been hard and weird as hell and I like you a bunch, let’s try getting takeout together/officially telling people we’re dating I guess/getting married for the tax break next time we fuck’).

I want stories about people who like each other a bunch, and like getting off together, and aren’t the main focus of each others’ lives, but are a good solid not-particularly-romantic presence for each other in passing or to come home to.  Aromantic life partners.  Something like that.  Like, whatever the opposite of deeply-emotional-queerplatonic-totally-nonsexual-romantic-friendship is, on the grid of sex-vs-feelings.

That.  Does anybody have recs for that?  I will take many, many different fandoms, possibly including fic for things I have never actually read or watched.  What keywords do you even search in AO3 for that?

How come every time the internet recommends some sensational new queer media, it always turns out to be some visceral and gratuitous on-screen gore show with a basic marvel studios style plot about high schoolers?

And every other time, it's literal children's media aimed at 10 year olds. This is the same exact dichotomy between reading "adult" fiction and getting stuck in the kids section if you don't want to watch sad people hurt themselves and each other. If anyone out there is vibing with me on this, please help me find some tv shows you've actually enjoyed. I'm so sick of wading through hour long episodes waiting for the characterization that its fans promised only to find out that they were conflating fanon and canon again.
