LIC Bike Parade

SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 2015  |  11 AM – 5 PM

In preparation for the parade, children and their families are invited to repair their bikes with Recycle-A-Bicycle; get free helmets and fittings with the Department of Transportation; and decorate their bikes at artist-led workshops. Also bring your gently used, children’s bicycle to donate or swap!

We met Rich Fields and his bike in Red Hook, Brooklyn two weeks after Hurricane Sandy.  Many apartment buildings still did not have electricity or hot water at this time.  Recycle-A-Bicycle coordinated a free sidewalk bike repair station in the neighborhood on November 10th and the Biking Public Project decided to lend a hand.  We met Rich there, who said he was moving to Red Hook shortly.  He currently lives in Riverdale, Long Island and works as a Juvenile Corrections Officer.  Rich Fields says that he loves riding his bike because, "I get competitive motivation when I see other people on their bikes."  His next big goal is to convince his girlfriend to ride with him.  Good luck Rich!

These Folks Rock

Whether you're looking for a more meaningful holiday gift than some crap from Walmart, or if you'd prefer to direct your money yourself instead of letting the taxman do it, here are some ideas of organizations that are changing the world. I endorse them not only here but also with my wallet. I hope you'll consider doing the same. 

Recycle-a-Bicycle 

- teaching kids to fix bikes, build bikes, providing life-skills and job-readiness skills, not to mention reliable and affordable bikes to New Yorkers

San Francisco Bicycle Coalition 

- transforming San Francisco's streets and neighborhoods into more livable and safe places by promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation

- this year alone they helped win huge victories for the Fell & Oak Street bike lanes and finally saw through a massive new project that will make Masonic safer for biking and walking

Lower East Side Ecology Center 

- this year they opened New York City's first electronics waste recycling center. you can drop off your old computers, TVs, iphones, do-dads and gadgets in Gowanus, Brooklyn and know that they will be responsibly recycled and not shipped to a developing country for children to scrap. 

Streetsblog and Streetfilms 

- changing the conversation across the nation about biking, walking and transit

Transportation Alternatives 

- hometown bike/ped/transit advocates 

Rider's Alliance 

- new start-up non-profit working on a two-pronged strategy to win better transit service in NYC

Strong Towns 

- one of the most interesting organizations i learned about in 2012. fiscal conservatives making the case for walking, biking and smarter land use patterns. and they do it all on a shoestring budget

Happy 15th birthday, Recycle-a-Bicycle!

Sorry to have missed this celebration last week. My road bike is a recycle-a-bike -- bought it last year and love it.
