Red Postman Butterfly

A trip to the Reiman Butterfly Wing at Reiman Gardens in Ames, Iowa is a good way to see butterfly species that are not found here naturally. The Red Postman (Heliconius erato) can be found from southern Texas to Argentina.

One unusual fact about this butterfly is that it gathers pollen instead of nectar. Here you can see pollen on the proboscis where it is agitated by the process of coiling and uncoiling, which releases the nutrients. In this way it is able to extract the needed compounds.
