the red-throated bee-eater is a colorful bird found in a wide range throughout tropical africa. they are named for their unique diet - all insects, but primarily honeybees and stingless bees. they nest in dirt tunnels made in the banks of gullies and rivers, and live communally at these sites in large groups year-round. the blue or green markings on the face vary throughout the bird’s range, and about 1% of the population has a yellow throat rather than the namesake red.

November 20, 2018 - Red-throated Bee-eater (Merops bulocki)

These bee-eaters are found across much of central Africa. They eat honeybees, stingless bees, and other insects, often foraging in pairs or small flocks. Nesting in colonies of up to 50 birds, they dig burrows in the ground after the rainy season, before the dirt has dried completely.

Red-throated Bee-eater - Merops bullocki

As its common name suggestsMerops bullocki (Coraciiformes - Meropidae) has a distinctive scarlet throat, green upperparts with buffy hindneck, buff breast and belly, blue thighs and under tail-coverts.

The Red-throated Bee-eater is a colonial and noisy bird native to Eastern Africa.
