Happy 30th Birthday to THE DAY TODAY. One of my first times on a set as a performer along with a bunch of fellow theatre kids from my agency. Seems like yesterday, but also a lifetime ago. Fond memories.
I have awakened to the news of the passing of comic legend Paul Neary. Although I had the privilege of meeting him only once as a kid during the early 1990s, likely at UKCAC, the interaction remains a cherished memory. Paul was a wonderfully accommodating fellow to teenage me. Paul's lengthy generosity in discussing my fledgling portfolio during that encounter, amidst the backdrop of meeting Marvel U.K. luminaries, was invaluable and profoundly inspiring. It is something that will always stay with me.
His noteworthy contributions to Marvel U.K., spanning from Excalibur to Hulk Weekly, hold a place as significant childhood milestones for me and many others. Paul's counsel at the convention that day, coupled with rigorous redrafting, played a pivotal role in my artistic development, culminating in the publication of my first professional comic artwork at the age of 15, I’m pretty certain that wouldn’t have happened without that lengthy conversation and support of a kid with a dream.
Beyond his exceptional inking and artistic prowess, his astute eye for talent brought forth notable names and powerhouse work from the like of Gary Erskine, Andy Lanning, Liam Sharp, Gary Frank, and numerous other U.K. stars.
Under his stewardship, the distinctive Marvel U.K. line of U.S.-sized comics, featuring titles such as Deaths Head II, Digitek, and Motormouth, emerged and left an indelible mark. It was a spectacle that fueled my youthful imagination, realizing that we could have our own U.K. heroes and universe under the prestigious Marvel banner. It inspired so much in my comic book journey. The memories of those convention days, marked by signed and sketched issues from Frank, Erskine, and Sharp, remain cherished possessions.
The era Paul Neary cultivated, while brief, stands as a testament to his legendary influence on the industry. His passing leaves a void, but his legacy lives on.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Neary.
