I Found a Secret Bank Account in My Wife's Name. She Swore It Wasn't Hers...
I only discovered it because we were going through some paperwork for our mortgage. Her name showed up on an old bank statement, with almost forty thousand dollars in the account.
I asked her about it that night.
She looked completely confused and told me she had never opened that account.
At first I thought she was lying. We argued for hours, because the account had her full name and date of birth on it.
The next morning, she called the bank with me sitting beside her.
That was when things got strange.
The bank said the account had been opened seven years earlier, before we were married. They also said the person who opened it had used an old address that my wife had lived at when she was in college.
My wife started crying because she suddenly remembered something.
When she was twenty one, her identity documents had been stolen from her car. She reported it, replaced everything, and completely forgot about it.
The bank investigated the account and found that someone had been depositing money into it for years.
Then they gave us the name of the person who had opened it.
It was my wife father.
He had died three years earlier.
Apparently, he had opened the account using her information and quietly saved money for her without telling anyone.
The bank transferred the money to her after confirming everything.
My wife still had no idea he had done it.
The strangest part was finding a note attached to the original account paperwork.
It simply said, For when she needs it most.
We never found out why he kept it secret, but suddenly the account did not feel suspicious anymore.
It felt like the last thing her father had left for her.
