"It just occurred to me. You are an unwilling queen of Cairhien and I am the uncrowned king of Malkier. And yet, here we sit on the ground, about to eat with our fingers."
Damn, if this isn't the entire theme of the first couple of books I dunno what is. Wowzers. But let us get into the rest of it.
My soul aches to read this because as having someone you are so close to that merely being *just* lovers just don't seem to do it justice but this is pretty darn close. The simple words, not even ciphered, to say "Come Home" and knowing your one and only has a real reason for you to do such, risking all to step foot into Tar Valon at this moment. And while some things can't be trusted to ciphers and pidgeons and trusted eyes and ears, some things can. I am quite sure Lan Gaidin knew something was remiss in those moments when the bond was masked (and being Malkeri appreciated that she did such for his benefit when it would have happened the other way, too.)
But the kick in the teeth moment was this one:
"The fate of the world depends on us. Our search is more important that our petty desires." Siuan turned around then, still in the circle of her arms. "That is why I called you back. Everyone has forgotten that we know about the Dragon Reborn because we were Accepted when Gitara had her Foretelling. But if they see us still working together, they might begin to suspect. We can't be seen together anymore."
Cut my heart out with a spoon next time, why don't you? Ugh. Saving the world and losing it at the same time. Considering this is 983... we're talking 14 years apart, only communicating via pidgeon.
Slay me now.
And then you put the dagger in my heart with this tidbit:
"Fool. You know I've never loved anyone as much as I love you."
Ugh. Just Ugh. I think I need to add this to my trope list: Mashiara.
*bangs knife on buckler* Well done!
