The Blue-winged Teal is sexually dimorphic, meaning the males and females look different. They are named for the blue patch along their forewings which are usually hidden when the wings are folded, but visible during flight. The male has a mottled brown, almost leopard print pattern to the body with a grey head and white facial crescent, while the female is mottled brown all over with a black bill. They are members of the genus Spatula, along with Northern Shovelers and Cinnamon Teals.

The Redhead is sexually dimorphic, meaning the males and females look different. Males have grey sides, a black breast and a red head. Females are a fairly even brown all over, with a pale ring around the eye. Redheads can be distinguished from the closely related Canvasback by their round head and steeper forehead. The bill is distinctive and tricoloured, being grey at the base with a white ring (which in some individuals is less apparent) just before the black tip. Redheads, like many other duck species, practice brood parasitism, which is when females lay their eggs in the nests of other species, thereby avoiding the energetic cost of incubating their own eggs.
