Fresh Straw; a farm in the countryside, a man laughing as two young boys dart around his legs, trying to feed the animals, as the boys kept roughhousing in the hay and laughing with their father.

Leather; safety and security wrapped around palms that kept shaking, the smell of it bringing him back to reality and the realization that nothing could touch him if he just kept the gloves on.

Cigar Smoke; heavy and dark but comforting all the same, a massive hall with a crow atop it and coins exchanging hand around a table. 

Citrus; crows pecking at a tanned hand, a girl’s laughter and smile, her dark hair falling like an obsidian waterfall. Sunlight on her face and the sensation of magic ripping through him stronger than any science. 

The Ocean; terrifying, breathtaking, unforgivingly brutal, but beautiful. a place of hello and goodbye. creating new memories where once there was only pain. a city perched atop the water and ruled by the tides themselves.

It is still relatively well kept, because unless he’s around a select few people, Kaz is really stoic and is pretty great at hiding how he feels. But, it’s probably how he looks at Pekka Rollins, the look of vengeance in his eyes. He doesn’t have to say it - the people closest to him know that he holds a vendetta against Rollins and he finds himself alright with the fact that they know, even though he didn’t want the man himself to see him coming.

⚔️ - Consider her worst enemy?

I’m going to cheat a little here and talk about Sherlock Holmes. Jamie has yet to make an enemy in Echo Springs that she considers a worthy mental opponent (she dislikes Kaz and Jessica, and is on her way to also adding Inej to that list) so, in order to really answer this, I’m going to have to delve into her canon, forgotten, past. Her relationship with Sherlock is too tangled to properly unpack here, but he is, without a doubt, her worst enemy. He’s the reason she was imprisoned, and he is the only person she considers on her intellectual level. As she says to him, “I know what that’s like. Only me”, in reference to how he sees the world. Without a doubt, he’s the person she considers to be her equal, with his empathy and morality acting as an impassable chasm between them. Despite not having full access to her memories, flashes of Sherlock still come to her, in the form of dreams, and she finds herself sketching him sometimes, wishing she knew who he was. As much as other inhabitants of Echo Springs could be, and are, thorns in Jamie’s side, and potential threats, there will never be another like Sherlock to Moriarty.

The job was supposed to be simple. An easy smash and grab, the buyer had said - some jewels. It hadn’t been simple. 

The uniform of the guards was scratchy and uncomfortable, and he’d had to forgo his cane for the sake of the job. It ached almost as bad as in the coldest winter, and - as far too often - he was running on very little sleep.

So little, in fact, that he didn’t catch it when an actual guard found him. 

The ensuing fight had been brutal, with Kaz breaking the man’s arm. He’d wanted to get in and out with no one the wiser, but a messy job was still a successful job - or so he’d thought. He’d left the man on the floor and had been exiting when the guard spoke, lifting his gun, and aiming to fire. 

Kaz had no weapon. No more tricks. Nothing left but a shattered leg and a rumpled, stolen uniform. I’m going to die. This is it. 

And then he saw the blood at the man’s temple, and heard the sickening thwack of a knife in the base of his skull. 

The guard toppled, dead in seconds, to reveal his Wraith behind him, an avenging hero more than any criminal. No - not a Lynx, not a Spider, not even his Wraith. So much more than that. Inej. 

Who could believe in a saint they couldn’t see when she was a miracle before his very eyes?

There’s a duality to Kaz that I’ve talked about a lot, and this song really reflects him, especially the Kaz Rietveld who still has a scrap of kindness and hope within him. A part of Kaz will always have this conscience, despite everything, and he has just spent so much time trying to silence that part of himself as he gets darker and darker.

Wylan Van Eck. Age 21. Approximately 1.7 meters in height. Lean build, reddish blond hair, freckles.

Beneath, scrawled in a loose jumble of letters, was an entry on the young man who Kaz had learned about that day. 

The son of a wealthy man from the nearest city, Wylan appears to be hiding something about himself. Currently working at a tailor shop but doing far too menial jobs for his level of education. Has a flute. Why would the son of a wealthy man skip town? Just how knowledgable is he with chemistry? And what is the meaning behind the letters piled beneath his mattress?

Jamie frequented the Echo Springs bookshop so often that she was known to every staff member. Her niche orders of books regarding her work had made her recognisable to them fairly quickly, which, in turn, had resulted in certain perks. For example, she was able to stand in the woefully small Art section with a book in her hand, quite clearly reading, and not be disturbed by any members of staff. She was, in fact, alone in this particular area of the shop, until a young man wandered over to the Music section.

Jamie kept her eyes trained her book for a few more moments, but, out of the corner of her eye, she could see that the young man was clearly looking for something. He looked exhausted -- pale and tired and distracted. And, though it was rather unusual for her to do so, he looked so pathetic and woebegone that she called over to him, “May I be of some assistance? Are you looking for something?” Her tone slightly too friendly, almost patronising, but not overtly so. She closed the book she had been reading, and smiled at him, the perfect emulation of a warm and friendly expression.

Each fear, each weakness, each blemish in his personality, was something for Kaz to defeat. A new challenge, to train himself to be better than. Pushed himself so hard that he would sleep for days at a time, exhaustion and improper diet finally getting to him after treating his body so badly. But the fears of hunger, of a lack of sleep, of death even, were placed to the wayside. He’d been through enough, and so little could cause fear in him as he became the thing to fear. 

Except for touch. 

He’d tried to get over it. Tried to simply ignore it. Tried to walk around, ungloved, to do little more than flinch when someone else touched him with their bare skin.

But he simply couldn’t. And, at a certain point, Kaz stopped trying to beat it, let this be his one concession to weakness - and let it fester until he could manage it no longer.
