My friend Jenn has a great headcannon called the Redskirts: elite women marines in old-school Star Trek sent in to mop up any situations the average Federation bridge crew can’t manage, so I created my own contribution: Flora Gambet, an Orion police investigator sick of not being taken seriously as an officer thanks to stereotypes about her race. Specialties include psychology, civilian legal procedures, and small arms marksmanship, plus one time she punched a GLEB (God-Like Energy Being) right in the glowcloud. Flora isn’t a heavy or a techie, but has an eye for details, coordinates well with others and, in an emergency, can activate her Orion pheromones to question captives.

Hi Nonnie, I get where you’re coming from, Spock would absolutely not discuss his sex life with Jim. But that doesn’t mean he would have any problem discussing alien procreation (or lack thereof) in a strictly academic sense for the benefit of educating a junior officer. And while he definitely lightens up as time goes by, i don’t think that at this stage (the beginning of the second season of tos) Spock is yet at a point where he’d verbally express any discomfort at being garlanded by giant oompa-loompas, whether or not he was actually feeling it. So imo it was ooc, whether or not i’m wearing my slash goggles.

i totally don’t mean to diss anyone’s good time! it’s just, for me, the whole episode was horribly awkward and weird, and the politics were so very, very dodgy and uncomfortable that i had trouble enjoying anything but the TOTALLY AWESOME YEOMAN LANDON who i think should have been made a recurring character who just jumps in and saves the hapless useless male redshirts on every away mission ever. She would be captain of the REDSKIRTS, who survive every episode and constantly save Kirk, Spock, and Bones without them even noticing, and then close each episode with gagh-eating contests and kickboxing.
