Album Review: ‘REDUX’ EP - Kilo Kish

A companion piece to 2018’s dark odyssey MOTHE, Kilo Kish’s latest EP REDUX still finds Lakisha Robinson in a state of transition, though with the aim of making you feel ‘strong, badass and capable.’

Recent single ‘SPARK’ carves a mournful path filled with thumping buzzsaw synths and hard-edged ennui, like a dreamy cross between ‘Disparate Youth’-era Santigold and Solange’s 2012 EP True as the Florida-born singer strives to keep her creative fire lit (‘This time, I really lost it/Don’t know where you are/Let's hope I come across it/In the water’). ‘OVER NOW’ follows in a similar vein, where stomping bass meets brassy reverb as a heavily-vocoded Kish bluntly states: ‘Lighten up/It's over.’ ‘BOTH SIDES’ turns relationship drama into 80s pop euphoria that gives Charli XCX a serious run for her money, while ‘NICE OUT’ is lush, swirling disco streaked with glowing neon as an anxious Kish fights against the daily grind (‘I'm afraid to go outside/So many people rule my mind/I can't escape where is the line/Chained ourselves to overdrive’).

The spiky bravado of ‘BITE ME,’ however, is the glitch-heavy video game soundtrack-cum-schoolyard taunt that soon explodes into a jackhammer breakdown. It’s a swaggering mission statement that further cements Kish’s experimental spirit, something she’s remained true to since the release of her 2012 debut, Homeschool.

While MOTHE was filled with restless introspection, REDUX sees Kilo Kish fully unleashed, her soft, distant vocal intensified by bold, brash layers of sound courtesy of longtime producer Ray Brady. With its disorienting synths, its cold, metallic feel and bright neon glow, it’s something straight out of a vaporwave AMV, a high octane anime or, of course, a video game, a natural progression for Kish, who also works as a visual artist. Honestly, I haven’t loved an EP or album this much in quite a while. I’m obsessed with this.

REDUX is short, sharp and all-round fierce. It deserves to be heard, loud and clear…

Kilo Kish’s latest clip lights the ‘SPARK’ for beautiful angst.

Dressed like a debutante bride, the Brooklyn-based singer/rapper is comforted by a glitchy, Santigold-esque beat as she wanders an empty coastline, pleading to the camera as it slowly dawns on her that her flame might soon be extinguished: ‘This time, I really lost it/Don’t know where you are/Let’s hope I come across it/In the water.’
