I suppose, with the advent of the internet, reference books like Brewer's Phrase & Fable became somewhat obsolete, especially this edition which was revised in 1981! But I do enjoy dictionaries you can hold in your hands, and Brewer's is just full of fascinating snippets of history and linguistics and literature that you can lose yourself in for hours.

i've been on a kick of searching for old photo books to keep on my desk as reference for drawing (after seeing @nosewhistleemporium's antiques book!). i know there are endless photos on the internet but i've been having a harder and harder time using the computer for art related shit these days. i like being able to draw in other locations than in front of my computer, too. sketch jams at friends' houses, hanging out downstairs with my roommate, sitting outside, etc. i keep wishing i had a few books to bring around and do studies from. i bought the antiques price guide on ebay as well as a photo book of plants, a book of photos of cultures of the world, and one silly looking pose guide for comic artists, haha. all were under $5.

maybe i'll keep a list in this post. if the books i bought are good i'll add them. for now i will say

"Material World - A Global Family Portrait" by Peter Menzel. I've had this book since I was a kid and it's filled with photos of various people across the world doing every day things as well as pictures of their homes and objects they own.

Anyhow, I'm a bit excited about getting a few books. I think it will boost my practice/productivity to have a book I can flip open and just draw something out of. It will also expand my ability to draw from imagination.

Art and music are two things I don't want to lose, but being an "adult" in the midst of a busy life, mental bullshit, and the world at large can make it challenging. gotta make it as easy for myself as possible.

hey just fyi princeton press is having a 50% off sale and all the "lives of the natural world" and "world of" animal books seem to be on sale (i think many of their other books are on sale too, i just care most about those ones)! they are technically text books but have great visual reference for individual species so i use them a lot as an artist (i have been collecting physical reference books since so many online spaces have been clogged with ai slop)
