Diagram of the ant life cycle by James Teason, 2013 edition World Book Encyclopedia
Ants develop in four stages: (1) egg, (2) larva, (3) pupa, and (4) adult. Ant eggs hatch within a few days into larvae. The larval stage lasts a few weeks. In some species, the larvae spin a cocoon before becoming pupae. The pupal stage lasts from one to several weeks. The adult ant then emerges.
