Reflected Glory

How do you get blue without “color”? The morpho butterflies dazzle our eyes with glorious, iridescent blue wings, but without pigment. Scientists say the cell structure refracts light in a specific wavelength to reveal this spectrum we see as blue.

I was asked to make a quilt depicting this butterfly. Could this natural, physical phenomenon be pointing me to something supernatural and true? Saint Paul wrote that when we look at Jesus, we "reflect like mirrors the glory of the Lord. We are transfigured by the Spirit of the Lord in ever-increasing splendour into his own image.” Let it be so.

I pieced this quilt using techniques made popular by Ruth McDowell, whose books have really inspired me. Here are some of the stages of the project:
