Are there any birth defects that would make a person blind? And all they are able to see is a big blurry glob with colors? either that or they just see darkness. My character is supposed to have eye contacts that correct her vision. these contacts have cameras and there is a little device that sticks to the side of her head that transmits the image from the cameras to a receiver inside her brain.
Cool concept! I’ll warn you from the start, especially if this is a congenital issue, that the brain may not actually develop the visual cortex very well. The reason for that is that, during brain development, the brain makes a lot of connections that are, well, useless. Anything that isn’t use deteriorates, and the cells move on to other functions, usually those of its neighbors. So even if she can get perfect connection from the cameras into her brain, her brain may not know how to process the information correctly. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_from_blindness )
In terms of causes of blindness, there are a TON of them, and a great place to start is another wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_impairment#Genetic_defects
Best of luck!
