She didn’t remember dreaming. She only remembered the darkness and the the quiet, finally. All the noise had faded away and then she was drifting. When she woke up there was only a woman in the room with her, it was a different room she noticed idly. She glanced around confused and tried to sit up, but the pain stopped her.
“Wait. Don’t do that.” The nurse gently lowered her back to the bed. “You have a few broken ribs and one of them nicked your lung. Dr. Whale had to do surgery, but you’re going to be alright.”
Rapunzel tried to speak, but no words came out.
“Let me finish changing your bandages and then I’ll go tell the Doctor and your mother that you're awake, alright?”
Rapunzel didn’t respond as the woman dabbed her face with something and then placed a few bandages over some cuts and scrapes. Methodically, the woman changed the wrappings on her side and checked the cast on her leg before leaving the room, and Rapunzel closed her eyes again.
