SPOILER FOR NOW YOU SEE ME: NOW YOU DON'T keep scrolling if you don't want to see it! discussions on charlie's name from now you three me under the read more button
in the beginning of now you see me 3, charlie is introduced by daniel as "Charlie Gees" — a last name we know to be fake, given that charlie introduces himself as charlie vanderberg at the end of the movie.
why Gees?
-> "gees" in Afrikaans means, quite literally, "ghost", "spirit" or "enthusiasm". it's a word used not only to indicate ghosts, but also the spirit of comradery — bringing people together. Charlie Gees is therefore the most apt name he could have had — and one he likely gave himself.
this is also sort of affirmed by bosco, during charlie's big reveal, introducing charlie not only as "the mastermind" but also "a ghost". charlie's name from the very beginning has been a clue to his identity without giving it away just yet.
ok we didn't see it but what if they did say goodbye though?? the first time he was literally kicked out so...
maybe he wasn't planning on it, wanted to leave quietly (again) but mel finds him by his locker and they talk. she's confused why he's taking some of his stuff with him, it's not like he won't be there tomorrow right? and he doesn't reply. her face falls. "i'm sorry mel" and it breaks her heart. she watches him walk away. "goodbye dr langdon," she says softly to the empty space.
i’m trying to be subtle and hang out on tumblr on my phone under my desk while work is quiet and you hit me with this 😭
there’s no way langdon goes straight home after the ambulance bay confrontation with robby. he’s just been told to fuck off by the person he looks up to most and now has to go home to his wife (who he’s not on the… best of terms with) and find a way to tell her that he’s fucked up so monumentally that he’s put his career, his life, and the lives of others at risk and he’s been doing it for months(!!). there’s a bottle of pills in the glovebox. he could take some now, close his eyes, dull the edges. his fingers twitch but he holds still, for now
so he hangs out in the parking lot. just sits there trying to build up the courage to admit to abby what he can’t even admit to himself, when someone knocks on the window of his car. mel looks exhausted, but she’s smiling at him as he rolls the window down. she apologises for catching him at a clearly… emotional time (she assumes he’s just processing the mci - he told her already that sensitive people are needed and maybe he’s one too - she’d never judge anyone for that). she just needs to tell him how much it meant to her that he took the time to make a connection with her on her first day - she knows sometimes that she can come across as too much and sometimes not enough. she can’t find the balance but he let her find her footing all while offering a hand for her to reach out to if needed.
he tells her that she’s neither - being herself is just enough and he really meant what he said in the break room
she looks at her watch - its already hours past their shift end and she obviously has somewhere to be.
she tells him quickly about the baby she helped deliver, and that a part of her wished he would’ve been there. she wishes she could’ve told him before he left without saying goodbye earlier (when mel sees his expression once she says this she regrets it instantly - the shock and hurt on his face)
he immediately apologises - something personal came up and he had to dip, but he’s proud of her for everything she achieved on possibly the craziest first day imaginable.
she apologises back and he’s says it’s fine, they’re even now. she has to go and pick up her sister, but she’s looking forward to working with him again.
as she walks off into the dark he’s faced with the fact that he’s had an impact on her whether he wanted to or not - and maybe slightly more terrifying she’s had just as much as an impact on him.
he’s never seen himself as a teacher or mentor. he’s a doctor because he want to heal. but now he realises that there’s this need deep down in the pit of his stomach, this need to be by mel’s side every step of her residency, this need to see her become a better, more caring doctor than he could ever be. and the only way he can do that is by facing the ugly truth that was bared in front of him today, and to check into rehab.
so he says goodbye to her. goodbye for now.
The next... hm, there's not really a good term for it. Part? Piece? Aspect, maybe...? Let's go with... layer, I guess. Not perfectly accurate, but it's close enough for now. The next layer to reality is known as the Transient World.
There are a number of names for it, the spirit realm, the afterlife, ghostspace, that sort of thing, but none are quite right. Yes, it is mostly important to Ghost-types, but it's more than simply a slice of existence rated for spirits. Dark-types, for example, are attuned to its wavelengths, though in a different way. It is as much about the shadows and secrets left in the dark and as it is death and the dead.
It's the layer with the most direct connection to the physical world, owing to its nature as a place of passing, hence Transience. Despite this, most Pokémon aside from the aforementioned Ghost and Dark-types experience little related to it. Perhaps a hapless soul will trip out of their still living body, or more concerningly, be dragged from it, but... well, there are very few cases where that has happened.
Despite what I said about what makes it what it is, death (and Death, for that matter) remains very much central to its functions in the cosmic Order. As far as we know, it's a sort of... place of waiting, and the paths onwards. A rest stop, a place of respite for the life-worn and weary before their departure into a new beginning, and so too, a road, all roads, their length, their start, and their end. Motion and stillness whispered in the same quiet breath.
For those of you who desire more practical knowledge, perhaps it would be interesting to know that certain moves can affect those who’ve slipped through the folds? Indeed, techniques like Shadow Ball are notable as ‘passthrough’-class, meaning they have the same Transient abilities that Ghost-types do! Of note, the bounds of a room typically includes the outermost layer of walls, so beings within those walls aren’t protected from roomwide attacks. Finally, and this comes from my personal experience with the use of a Phasing Emera, you can both see and hear while within the walls! Of course, as all Pokémon can attest, our exceptional senses for battle renders those who harbor hostility known to us, even when they’re within the Transient World. Such is a result of its connection to baseline reality.
As for how a civilian might encounter the Transient World and its various effects? Well, it’s mainly used by Ghost-types to sneak into places. You know, to better fuck with those inside.
Gotta love it.
A wonderful commission by @princess-self-shipping who is wonderful and you should also pay them for art
Anyway! It's my version of Loop from ITMYAW and the fic that has yet to be posted!
Because I believe in the creature loop agenda. They deserve a tail. And peets.
if i had a nickel for every time i ended up in a fandom with canon(?) mpreg i’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
I finally finished the redesign of my baby boi!! I love him so much, I want to play him again so badly
