          the difference was stark, and the stares of men and women alike did not go unnoticed as she walked among them. her name, eivor of the raven clan, had been announced as she entered the hall, and she heard it whispered among the folk there. she was considered a savage, a pagan in a land that was turning its eyes to christianity. an invader. and she heard the intake of breath from those civilized folk as eivor did not bow or curtsy to the woman whose presence dominated the room. she must be their queen, she bore herself like a jarlskona. 

            ‘ majesty, ‘ well, she wasn’t a complete savage, was she? she knew at least what titles to use. ‘ i thank you for the invitation to your court. ‘ though it had not been eivor the summons was directed to. ‘ our jarl was called away, and sent me in his stead. ‘

          he’d been so focused on the flowers, her footsteps didn’t even register. her voice, however, did break through the haze, turning him from the roses he’d been pruning. ‘ your majesty? ‘ he’d been kneeling for too long, his leg stiff from the lack of movement. even with his cane, it was a struggle it stand, and it took him a moment to bow to her. ‘ has something happened? ‘ she said she was worried about him, and he tried to think of what might have happened to turn her mind to such a concern.

“i lay down a shrine and i come with the autumn to tear it down,” she explains, hand moving as if to gesture at an altar that does not sit before them. nimue is careful to practice those more physical magicks away, venturing deep into woods and moors, keeping her rituals secret and obscure. it would surely make those of camelot uneasy to see such things; they work better in those natural spaces, anyway, feeling more at home among the roots of a tree until the leaves begin to fall than they would against man-placed stone.

           “He’s a giant compared to her and yet she is fearless.” There’s a warm smile that tugs at his lips as grey hues flicker to her. “Should I take that as a good thing?” Their friendship stretched beyond years, so he was completely relaxed in her presence, the same went for her own companion.
