Once inside the liver, they invade hepatocytes and undertake a phase of asexual multiplication. The sporozoite matures into schizonts in these cells, bursting with thousands of merozoites. At the end of the multiplication process, the schizonts explode, releasing merozoites into the bloodstream. This is where the liver phase ends, and the symptomatic blood phase starts.
(Erythrocytic Cycle) (the human blood phase):
Released from the liver, merozoites enter the bloodstream and invade RBCs. Once inside the RBCs, they develop through the following stages: ring form, trophozoites, and schizont. Eventually, the schizont matures and divides to cause rupture of the RBC, releasing new merozoites, which will further infect RBCs. This cycle of invasion, multiplication, and RBC lysis leads to various symptoms, such as fever, chills, etc. While feeding, these gametocytes are transferred to another mosquito, which closes the transmission cycle.
