Green Bay Western Action, Part Two
I recently scanned a few slides I made along this charming regional road, the Green Bay and Western. This railroad operated for nearly 100 years, from 1896 to 1993, until it was gobbled up by the Wisconsin Central. Looking today via Google Maps, it seems that most, if not nearly all, of the rails have been abandoned.
I had to ask for help to get locations on these shots—and received it from Dan Luedke, a conductor on the road, and Andy Laurent. The brick farm house is on the Ahnapee & Western between Casco and Rio Creek, Wisconsin; the train is eastbound headed toward Algoma. The second image here comes from Casco and is most likely the same train on its return.
This road seemed to really cotton to Alco locomotives, which is one reason rail enthusiasts were attracted to the regional carrier.
