Tale of Regret (3): Awakening
Regret awoke with a gasp, white sheets flung in every direction as it sat up. A dream. The falling had been a dream...
A quick look around revealed a familiar setting: The Lab. The True Lab, back when it was used and well-kept. The smell of disinfectant hung in the air and Regret could hear the hum of machines from down the hall. The quiet click of a ballpoint pen caught its attention and it turned to glance at the door.
“Ah. You are awake.” W.D. Gaster stood in the doorway, a clipboard in one hand and the pen in the other. “That is... quite relieving. How are you feeling, Chara?”
Chara?
Regret looked down at itself, staring at the human hands that moved to its commands. It bolted out of bed - despite Gaster’s protest - and hurried to the nearest mirror. Sure enough, a crimson eye peered out from the reflection from behind the mass of messy, medium brown hair that hung just below the shoulders.
How had this happened? Why was Regret in Chara’s body? If anyone, it would have suspected being thrown into Frisk’s; it was his SOUL that Regret was holding, after all.
“Chara?”
Regret glanced up at Gaster’s reflection in the mirror, then turned to face him. Its confusion quieted at the sight of the worry etched into the skull-face in front of it. “Sorry,” it replied meekly. “We’re... I’m... just a little confused...”
Gaster nodded his understanding as he helped her back to the bed she’d been laying in. He sat in the chair next to it as “Chara” situated “herself.” Unlike the Gaster that Frisk had met - a dark, broken, hunched over mass - this Gaster’s skull was unmarred by cracks or markings; he sat straight in the chair as he peered at her with an expression that she knew well: regret. “I am not surprised by your confusion. You were asleep for several days.” The Royal Scientist hesitated. “We were... unsure if you would awaken. The DT machines could not detect any Determination coming from your body.”
Regret hesitated as well. It didn’t want to give anyone false hope... “Chara is still sleeping,” it admitted. “We seem to have woken up instead of her.”
For a monster with no eyebrows, Gaster did a good impression of raising one. “Then who are you? And why are you in Chara’s body?”
“Regret. Chara’s regrets. Frisk’s regrets. We don’t know why we’re in Chara’s body.” Regret held out Chara’s hands, a SOUL popping out. The red, Determined SOUL had a small, grey, upside-down SOUL in its middle. “This SOUL is Determined too. Determinations attract?” it suggested hesitantly, pushing Chara’s hair out of her face.
Gaster frowned. leaning forward to inspect the SOUL. “Indeed, this does seem to be a different SOUL... while it is also filled with Determination, it seems different somehow... there is also the matter of the monster SOUL. Were you a monster originally or a human?”
“Monster, we think. We were... a creation made of monsters. An Amalgamate.” Regret watched Gaster’s eye sockets widen in surprise, and an odd sensation came over Regret. “You know what happened,” it blurted out.
“I do not know what you are referring to,” Gaster denied immediately, a frown returning to his face.
“Amalgamates. You know what we are. But there are no Amalgamates right now in this world.” Regret didn’t know how it knew this, but it did. Alphys’s lab reports spilled from Chara’s lips in perfect recitation. Gaster just stared at her, mouth slightly agape.
After several moments of silence, the skeleton sighed. “Yes, I know of the Amalgamates. As for you and Chara, well, we can tell everyone that a mysterious monster saved your life by fusing with you. That will explain why you have a monster SOUL and a grey eye...” Grey eye? Chara had a grey eye now? “‘The fusion may have left her memories... fuzzy, but she seems to remember everyone.’ That should keep them from prodding you too harshly...” Gaster stood, clicking his ballpoint pen. “I do not want them acting too rashly. After all, I still have quite a number of questions for you.” The Royal Scientist headed for the door. “Try to act natural. The Dreemurs will surely be here soon to fuss over you, Chara.”
With that, W.D. Gaster was gone, leaving Regret - Chara - alone with its... her thoughts.
