The cancer had spread much further than she’d anticipated. ‘Stage four’ the doctor had told her. And she’d kept it a secret from Reid for as long as she could. Ani had been out in the garden that morning, slowly and painfully making her rounds to water the flowers when she’d collapsed. Reid wouldn’t be home for another six hours. Their children would find her first. Lily would scream and fall to the ground next to their mother, Aiden would freeze at the doorway silent, and Reid Eliot Junior would be the first to come to his senses and call for an ambulance. Though she was brought to the hospital, she may as well have been dead already. Her organs were shutting down on her, and instead of forcing her to work through the pain, it was better to keep her sedated. Three days later, Anastasia Marie was gone from the world. She’d left a note for each of her children, as well as one for her husband. But it took Reid nearly a year after her death to finally read it.
Dear Mr. Kennedy,
I’m so happy I got to marry my best friend. I’m so happy I got to spend the rest of my life with my best friend. I got to wake up next to you each morning, and be your final goodnight when we finally went to sleep. Every day was another adventure with you and there was never enough time in the day to spend it laughing and smiling and just being with you. Whenever I didn’t get the job I wanted, whenever you came home frustrated with work, whenever one of the kids were failing a class, couldn’t sleep because of a nightmare, when Waldo passed away… We faced it together, we faced it as a team. We tackled everything together… Except for this once.
I can’t tell you how sorry I am that I didn’t tell you. But if I had, nothing would have been the same for the last few months. And I didn’t want anything to change, I didn’t want to see that look in your eyes, I didn’t want the kids to see me breaking down and know why. I’m so sorry I was so selfish. I can’t imagine how much you’re hurting, how much the kids are hurting. You need to keep going, you need to keep going for them. Make sure that Aiden expresses himself, that Reid Eliot Junior has fun, and Lily knows her self-worth. You’re a great father, and it shouldn’t ever change.
I love you. I can’t tell you that enough. I love you, I love you, I love you. And I can’t bear to say goodbye, so I’ll see you soon. You’re cooking dinner in the kitchen at the moment and you’re calling for me to come and help you.
I love you and I’ll see you soon~
—Anastasia Marie Kennedy
Her injuries were awful, and she’d barely made it through surgery. Her car had slipped on the ice and the paramedics had thought she’d bleed out by the time she made it to the hospital. But, by some miracle, she hadn’t. So she was healing, and Rylan was visiting her in the hospital every moment she could. But as happy as she was to see him, she had this creeping sense of dread in the back of her mind that she was nearing the last she’d see him. It was the night before she was meant to go home that she’d written the letter. That morning, she passed away, baffling doctors and Rylan himself.
Rylan,
You’re ridiculously over-protective. I hate how you’re so quick to criticize everything, and the day I met you I thought you were an asshole. But a beer or two later and we were getting along fine, and I was beginning to like being around you. I tried to friendzone you, I really had. But that day I’d walked into your house unannounced and you turned around completely shirtless, I knew I was a goner. I was falling for your words, your sense of snark, falling into the blanket of your protectiveness and hidden sensitivity. I tried so hard to resist.
Then we had one night where we couldn’t, and a few days later I’d come back to your doorstep covered in blood and at a loss at who I was. Who you were. I was at a loss as to why you were so damn important to me.
I love how messy we made your bed, I love making brunch with you after one of our sleepovers. I love how I’m probably over-worrying and how this will just be a letter I’ll read to you in bed later and we’ll both laugh about it and kiss and go to sleep. We’ll have our happily ever after. The lawyer and the cop.
This is ridiculous. But just in case.
I love you. Always and forever.

Subtle Hints || Reid/Viggo || Timelorded
Between Reid and Viggo, contrasts were apparent from a varying spectrum that spanned across rank in society to the simplistic nature of age. In the end, though, there appeared to be a common string to connect them on paper: Anastasia Ilona. While the former had formed a different relationship with the young woman than the latter, both could be said to be protective and wanting what was best for her. For this reason alone, the one from the fourth level trekked down to the room that was solely occupied by the man who held one of his closest friend's heart within his grasp, desiring to know if the hand that held it would keep it safe.
In a way, then, this was not just an ordinary invitation extended to the other for tea, but an interview process. Cordial in nature, polite and respectful, but with all the qualities of vetting out the truth and providing assurance that Reid Kennedy deserved the trust Anastasia placed in him. Concern and suspicion were not easily swayed, even in spite of the recent confession from the man that was briefly shared by the statuesque brunette, one that expressed the line every couple faces with trepidation before plunging into vulnerability from their admission. Contrary to the softened demeanor that usually accompanied him, the core principle of caution was something that did not waver, particularly when the reason of unease was tangled with someone he cared about.
Balanced on top of the box of tea that was held in both hands, the kettle that had been gifted to him by the very one he was meeting sat. With Reid's door in sight, there was a readjustment given to the handling of the possessions, shifting them enough under one arm to free the knuckles from the other to knock on the grain of the wood.
