Very rough translation from the video’s annotations. It’s another dicey translation, folks. Apologies in advance:
U-boat Kommandant Johannes von Reinhartz realizes that the war is meaningless and has only led to death and destruction. He longs for freedom, or maybe even peace.
They filmed in Manchester, Liverpool, Prague and Malta. For his preparation, he tried to understand how someone during the war would have lived through the crisis. Their studio in Prague (where the U-boat set was?) was a confined space. They had a large team. In Malta, they wore thick jackets to pretend it was winter, despite the weather being 35 degrees.

Plot reminder: December 1942. We meet the very experienced U-boat ace Johannes von Reinhartz (Clemens Schick) who is sent with U-822 on a secret mission to the US East Coast in order to disembark three saboteurs. His loyalty is questioned and U-612, with its Commanding Officer Wrangel (Stefan Konarske), is sent in pursuit.
