"Finn, have you ever eaten anyone? Shadowheart told me pirates eat each other sometimes when food runs out."

Finn's head shot up in surprise, he had never expected Morren to make such a raunchy question.

"Eaten anyone out— oh."

No, this actually made a lot more sense. Of course, she'd think of the logistics about being stuck out at sea, or even lost for that matter.

"Oh, you mean cannibalism. Yeah, fuck no. Never been that stuck for food and if you ever see me Da's crew, you'll understand why you'd rather starve than to take a bite out of them."

He looked her over for a moment, genuinely amused and curious as to how her mind worked. Morren never had a simple question for Finn, which he loved.

"Besides, you're more likely to die from thirst before starvation out there. Can't drink the sea water, you know?"

The laugh that echoed along the roadside cliffs made the rogue pause. Whatever caused it, he doubted it came from anything friendly, especially given the viscera scattered around them. It reminded him of the harpies' nest they’d come across back in the Grove. But at least that nest had been a somewhat contained mess of bone and the like; this was more of a bloodbath.

He had frozen in place, while Morren stood before him like a deer in front of a cart... stunned by fear. Unsure what her instincts might scream at her to do, he made the best decision he could think of: he reached forward, clamped a hand over her mouth to muffle the yelp, and tugged her into a nearby crevice, using his own body as a shield to protect her from whatever in the Hells those creatures were.

They'd need to head back once they could, warn the others, maybe rally the routes and fight them? He wasn't entirely confident on that front. But plans beyond the moment were futile if they didn't survive, and so Finn held his breath and strained his ears, listening for the scampering steps of the creatures and the continued snap of bone.

His biggest hope was that the flowers on the shrub would mask their scent long enough to wait out the passing of the creatures. That was – unless Morren had a better plan. He tried to ask, raising a brow and jerking his head slightly in the direction of the monsters.

Finn sat on the rickety wooden beams of what remained of a broken fishing dock, dangling precariously over the slow-moving river. What river? He hadn’t a clue, but it wasn’t the sea—that much was certain. The calm flow of the water brought a meager sense of peace, though the air stank of rotten flesh and damp wood. At least it was something familiar, something he could work with.

He needed a plan. His head throbbed with the weight of exhaustion, his thoughts circling back to the worm writhing in his skull. A healer—that’s what he needed. Someone who could yank the damn thing out before it drove him mad. He exhaled sharply, his eyes scanning the horizon, the soft ripple of the water helping to steady his nerves. Rivers led somewhere—villages, towns, and if he was lucky, the sea. And the sea meant the Dúncannon. He’d find it. He always did.

The sand shifted behind him, faint but unmistakable, followed by the groan of cracked wood beneath the weight of an unfamiliar footstep. Finn’s shoulders tensed. One hand instinctively rested on the hilt of his dagger, his fingers curling around it with practiced ease. But he didn’t draw—not yet.

Without looking back, he spoke, his voice low and sharp.

"I just came from a burning wreck. If you think I’m worth robbing, you can piss off."

"That.. depends on who you ask. But, I dunno, maybe... depends on the day. Some days I think I deserve to be tossed off a cliff, but today's not one of them days, so don't worry."

He settled in beside her and wrapped an arm around her back, pulling her into a lazy one-armed cuddle.

"And you know you deserve the same, right? I'll do that for ye -- I won't let anyone, especially certain vampires, touch my best mate."

"Well... it's a city. Like any city, it's got its nice shiny parts, and the parts no one wants to see. And there are parts that, if you somehow stumbled into them... I doubt you'd make it back out. I mean... Gale calls it the City of Splendour, just like it says on the poster. Pretty in places, big all over, full of magic folk and spells and all that. And I'm from the docks. So my whole life there was by the sea, sneaking onto ships with my mates and setting off alarm wards. That, or the pub my mum used to work at. You know ?Waterdeep, to me, was them docks. The docks and the sea beside it... That was home."

He took another sip of his drink.

"You'd probably hate it though."

Gale couldn't help but smile at Morren's unexpected confession. Perhaps it was his company, or perhaps simply the fact that he'd arrived bearing stew for her to enjoy. He liked to think it was the former.

"If I dare say, perhaps we're close to becoming friends? At the very least, close allies in this little adventure of ours. I mean, with my magical prowess, my charm, and your remarkable skill with a bow, not to mention the handful of spells you can muster -- I'd say we make quite the pair."

He nearly forgot to hand over the stew amid his own meandering, chuckling softly to himself before passing it across with a smile. It was difficult these days to read whether his presence was welcome once the talking stopped, so he lingered, and waited. The people one met on the road to adventure were a very different breed from the academics he'd known in the great cities of the realm.

But, some folks, Morren especially, had a lovely charm to them that made them far more endearing (and honest) than those within the world of academia.

"MOOOOORRRREEEEEEEN! There you fucking are! I've been looking all over the camp for you."

Finn approached her with a mostly empty, unlabelled brown bottle in one hand, the other arm flopping around her shoulders to pull her into a tight, one-armed hug. The scent of alcohol from the bottle was far stronger than that of any usual drink.

"I was thinking... you know how you have so many questions… so many. Which is fine, it;s fun answering them. But I was thinking... why don't we make this into a drinking game?"

He grinned, swishing the bottle, which gave only a pitiful splash of liquid inside. Most of it had already been consumed by the pirate during his search for his best friend.

"I haven't thought of the rules yet, but we can make it up as we go!"

She deserves so much more than what she's been given. More than what we give her."

Finn paused, drumming his fingers against his thigh before finally adding,

"She's like a little sister to me, alright? Bloody adore her. And if anyone tries to get to her, they'll have to get through me first."
