1878 – Death of John O’Neill. Born in Co Monaghan, he was an officer in the American Civil War and member of the Fenian Brotherhood. O’Neill is best known for his activities leading the Fenian raids on Canada in 1866 and 1871. He had won the only success the Fenians ever achieved in their numerous enterprises against Canada. so Ireland has a ballad, but it’s a good one. (?)
Interview with artist Chloe O’Malley
When did you start embroidering?
I first started embroidering back in 2008 when I was doing a foundation course in art and design. I was primarily working in the subject of textiles, using different mediums, one of which was hand embroidery.
You also have a separate Instagram account for your tattoo work. What did you start doing first - tattoos or embroidery?
Technically I actually started tattooing first but I was in college and working so it took a backseat for a while.
Is it challenging to have 2 Instagram accounts in terms of keeping them up to date?
Sometimes it can be challenging, I try and be equally active on both but my tattoo work is something I do pretty much every day of the week. If I'm not tattooing, I'm drawing up designs and can post new things often. Embroidery is something I do in my spare time and it can be a bit sporadic in terms of new posts.
As an artist, where do you look for inspiration?
My main inspiration comes from a love of wildlife and nature, I feel very compelled to translate this huge interest in my life into the tattoos and embroidery that I make and I love being able to do that through these different mediums of art.
I also take inspiration from other artists that I respect and look up to, book illustrations, fashion, ecology and nature documentaries.
What is your working environment like?
At home I like to sew and draw on the couch in my comfy spot. I also have a little room where I keep all my art and craft supplies and sometimes work there when I don't want to be distracted by cats and boys!
Describe your style in 3 words.
This one is hard! I think cheerful, homely and pure :-)
What helps you to be more creative?
I find when I'm least stressed/busy I will have a burst of enthusiasm to try a new idea out which I find then helps keep the momentum going for a while. l also find a big walk and a clean house helps too!
What are you working on at the moment?
Well I've just finished a shop update and a few commissions so I'm in the middle of a refresh, looking for new inspiration and getting my ideas down before my next set of hoops!
