Does having your sister and Steve there for you help with the memories and the nightmares?

"Sometimes, it can. I mean, seeing that they’re safe and alive and here, it’s a good thing. It feels good. But there are a lot of times when nothing’s going to change my nightmares. They’re not even just dreams, most of the time; they’re memories. And then sometimes … sometimes they get worse, because they end up being dreams of what could happen. With them here, what I could do to them if I snapped … Those are the worst.”

What's it like, having him stay by your side no matter what?

"Truthfully? It scares me. It scares me to know that I could snap, and he’d still be there. Because I know damn well that, while he’s a match for me even like that, he could still get hurt, or worse. Sometimes I think he shouldn’t stay. That it would be better for him if he walked away, and moved on … He’s a good man, and he deserves better. He’s too good for me."

How do you feel about Howard Stark?

"He was a good man, and a brilliant one."

A good man. That’s the least of what he was, in James’ estimation, but that was so long ago and even now he doesn’t dare say what he means. He and Howard had been something no one should ever know; their time together, snatched between missions and on periods of downtime with the SSR, had been something rushed and never fully explained, but still precious to him. It was something he held onto, even now, and though things had gone unnamed between them James could a times let himself acknowledge that he could have loved Howard, given the time and chance. It was all gone now, lost to time, but the feeling had remained.

How did you feel when you got your memories back and Steve with still beside you?
