Midnight Stories
I woke up screaming again but he was there. He was always there. Quickly the bedside lamp turned on, his arms pulling me in for a gentle embrace. My heart beat seemingly too fast against his own. Even my breath was far too heavy to match his. Slowly his voice would reach my ears. One of his arms wrapped around me tightly and his other arm had a hand running through my messy hair. Any crying I had done was muffled by his soft voice. "Before the gold and the glimmer have been replaced, another sun-soaked season fades away... you.. have stolen my heart." I never grew tired of that part..sometimes I even hummed along to help myself calm down. Of course here came the part after the gentle lulling. The part where I played child and him protector.
“Rook?”
“Hmm?”
“Can you stay in here tonight?”
“Don’t I always?”
It was the truth. I smiled and buried my head in his chest. His soft humming continued but I couldn’t help but ask what I always asked late in the nights. All of this had become our routine. “Rook..can you tell the story of Cain and Abel again? I just hear it different each time..” All that was given was a soft nod of Rook’s head. Firstly we had to get comfortable. Rook made me stand up for a moment as he fixed the sheets and covers. I could only watch as he liked the bed made his way. When the job was done though I quickly crawled into the bed again. Rook waiting for me to get ready before he joined me. When I curled up against the headboard he slid into bed too. His arm finding home around my neck, my head finding home on his chest. The story of Cain and Abel never truly made sense to me. While I understood it mostly, not to lie or murder, I never understood. Sometimes I even thought that this God of Rook’s was rather morbid. If he loved his people why did he allow them to be slaughtered by their own blood? Maybe I was looking at this all wrong..of course that would be a conversation for another late night.
Halfway through the story I slowly looked up at Rook’s eyes. He always had a passionate look when telling stories. I loved that about him. How he truly did care for everything and everyone around him. Smiling I reached up to touch his jaw softly. “I think I’m ready for bed now..as long as you’re gonna stay.” My words were soft as I tiredly crawled to hide in the covers. I never pulled the covers up all the way and sometimes that bothered my love. He wanted the covers normally and I wanted them halfway down. Tonight I was willing to have them up though. Slowly I pulled them up to right below my shoulders. Rook climbed in with a tired smile on his face.
“Goodnight, Bear.”
“Goodnight, Rook.”
Down Hill and Back Up
He burst through the doors of the Whisper Cavern Manor. Seemingly out of breath as if he just ran a marathon. His voice called out rather panicky. "Ash! Narimé!" Long legs strode down all the familiar halls he had crossed so many times. Coming to a set of oak french doors, Daniel pushed them open slowly. Peering inside of the room his eyes fell upon the face of his two bosses. "My lady and sir..." The Archer-Lyall's form paused to catch a breath in the doorway. "I bring urgent word of our previous neighbors, Cut Rock Creek Chateau. It appears they are gone. The place is empty and up for sale. I'm not sure how long they have been gone though..nothing seems suddenly out of place." Looking between Sir Hervok and Lady Lagina, Daniel was just waiting to see how they would take the news. He knew competition between the two places was awful. Along with some bad blood between the owners of both Manors. Hell, even his mother Elettra had some bad blood with the Cut Rock members. When he had left to find somewhere else to stay his mother told him that was the last place she wanted him. Daniel hadn't even thought about the children Rose, Korrin and Nineva. What if they heard the commotion? Came in wondering what it was the Archer-Lyall worked had been rambling about. He should have thought that part through. The last thing he needed was a scolding from Narime and Ash because he had gone blurting out. That and the children would surely want to get involved in whatever it was that was about to happen. Sighing he looked with soft brown eyes to his ‘family’. "Should I inform our neighbors? The Archer Estate and even go as north as to inform the Secret Woodland Mansion?" Even if they didn't bless of on it Daniel would likely call his father Angier and mother Elettra. Maybe he would even slip in a word to his siblings too..no scratch that, that would be far too risky. The only one he would dare tell would be Greer only because he knew how to keep his mouth shut. Standing tall and ready to take word from Ash or Narime, the Archer-Lyall looked behind his shoulder to see if the children were close by. "One last thing, I got a movie and some books for the kids to keep them busy while we figure this all out.” He smiled and pointed his thumb over his shoulder. "They're still in my car, I can go grab them later..or now if you two wish to talk alone." It was all left hanging in the air now. Would this be Daniel's moment to shine and help Narime and Ash or would he simply slink back into just being the personal assistant of Whisper Caverns Manor?
