This amazing antique icon depicts the Prophet Solomon who was the king of ancient Israel. Solomon was the son of King David and one of the most prominent figures in the Old Testament. He is said to have lived in the 10th century BC and was known to be an exceptionally wise monarch. The featured icon is part of the iconostasis of the Church of Transfiguration in Kizhi Pogost, which is located in the Republic of Karelia. It was painted approximately in the first quarter of the 18th century. Religious images commonly depict Solomon as a young man dressed in royal vestments, with a crown on his head. In this particular icon, Solomon is also pointing toward a church.

The antique icon of the Resurrection that you can see in the featured image is a good example of the influence of Western European art on Russian iconography. The icon itself was painted by an anonymous master from the Russian North (Vologda region) in the 18th century, while its silver oklad was made much later in St. Petersburg in the 19th century. The given antique icon of the Lamentation, also known as “The Entombment of Christ,” dates back to the first half – mid-16th century. It is believed to have been painted in Pskov, a city famous for its Pskov school of iconography, where medieval Russian icons and mural paintings were created between approximately 1175 – 1525. The name of the icon speaks for itself: it is a depiction of the scene of the lamentation over the dead Christ, with Mary stooping the head over the body of her Son.

Painted by an anonymous icon painter, it depicts a notable Byzantine bishop from Caesarea Mazaca, a city in Cappadocia. Basil was famous for his care and patronage for the underprivileged and poor. The given 17th-century religious masterwork was painted by an anonymous icon painter from the Kremlin Armory Workshops. But what does an armory have to do with holy relics?
